Jane sounds like she might have tresses, or eyes that flash violet when she's angry.

Also too many describers of what he/she wore. A faded leather jacket. A Calvin Klein mini skirt. Sheesh. I put a book down today after the first paragraph went on too long about the bouclé skirt the main character was wearing.

I feel bad that I put down "I shall wear midnight" and haven't picked it up again. But it's got that witch hunt feel to it which I really hate. That's actually one of my favourite Pratchett's. I really love the ending. It's a proper ending for Tiffany and it made me happy, so fwiw I think you might find yourself rewarded for perserving. Of course, it's all very subjective.

Lists!
That's what made me give up on the Girl in the Tattoo part two.
A list of IKEA bloody furniture including the stupid model names.

Weeg, there's on more book for her. The last Pratchett. I think that's another reason I'm avoiding finishing. it.

Ah, excellent topic.
Anything where if you go into the library/bookstore you see a whole shelfful of this person's books and they're all in the same font (except for Terry Pratchett, of course). These days, pretty much anything with dragons (except for...) Anything by an author whom I despise for their political/economic perspective (e.g., Ayn Rand) Anything that has implausibly written dialogue Anything that has lots of implausible sex (a little implausible sex is ok, but if I turn to page 56 and the whole page is dripping with absurdity then forget it Things that are pretty much just about relationships, like the whole plot turns on whether she gets together with the hot fireman or not (well, unless it's exceptionally well written or done to make some political or socioeconomic point).
Um, should I go on? You were better off asking me what kind of book I don't put down.

Things that are pretty much just about relationships, like the whole plot turns on whether she gets together with the hot fireman or not (well, unless it's exceptionally well written or done to make some political or socioeconomic point). This one has bothered me lately. I read a Sebastian Faulks book that had a cool setting and all, but the entire plot was an affair, and to care much about what was happening you had to somehow believe along with the characters that their relationship was incredibly profound and significant. But it really was just an affair. With not a lot of changes it could have been an interesting look at the psychology of affairs/love/relationship, but the characters weren't that deep or at all self-aware so it just felt like a soap opera to me. He's supposed to be such a good writer and I acknowledge he's not a BAD writer, but this book was my second attempt to like him, and it failed.

Why, thank you. After such a brilliant start, please do go on!

The relationship stuff that bugs me is where the whole conflict or tension and will they won't they stuff comes from some basic misunderstanding that if they just talked to each other would be resolved. I want to slap the people involved and say 'just bloody well ask, or go and talk to him/her'

50 Shades is a woeful example, I know. But at the beginning when she describes her too-large eyes (or similar) - and I laughed. Then she tripped through the doorway in front of the guy. Just so bad. I wrote that shit as an earnest 15 year old.

good thing i just write for my own fun, no one would read it ...
can't think of a fix rule for me. there are books i know are bad and badly written, and i still enjoy them. and there are books i know are good, and i can't finish them. and maybe at a different time, in a different frame of mind, i enjoy them though. what sometimes gets on my nerves are the same phrase coming up all the time - unless it is done on purpose to show something about a character (i.e. that they are thinking the same thing all the time).

Well thank you. Ok...
Any book that has more than a passing mention of baseball in it
I am utterly bored by novels about middle-aged men pining after younger women (e.g., The Museum of Innocence ["Füsün! siiiigh!"] ; get over it ffs)
Those sorts of space exploration novels that are mostly about the equipment
Fanfic of any sort
Biographies, unless gorgeously written

Yes he was older than me. I have just realised that the book has been sitting ignored on my book shelf for however many years since then. I will now donate it to one of the "mini libraries" that are popping up around the city. Thank you Liiisa

HA! Ok, that's hilarious - what the hell was the guy thinking?
That book has its interesting bits - Pamuk writes about Istanbul in such a way that makes me constantly wish I were about to go to Istanbul. But sweet Jesus in rollerskates that novel is about 300 pages too long.

"Snow" forever sticks in my mind as a book I found impossible to get through.
Istanbul was fantastic, but you know Pamuk has actually set up a museum to match his book and it's really expensive? We didn't bother!
PS Pamuk is the Turkish for cotton, I discovered.
