I do it while eating dinner (yes, we're barbarians who eat dinner in separate chairs in the living room while playing with our separate laptops), before following up with the New York Times crossword mini-puzzle, and if it's Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, the real crossword puzzle (Thursday through Sunday are too hard and I can't be bothered).
I used PIOUS and TEARY but didn't get it til the 4th line anyway. But those two words are nice because they give you all the vowels plus a couple of the top English consonants. (I learned in a cryptography winter term class long ago that the most frequently used letters in English are ETOANRISH.)

I wonder if wordle would accept SHITE as a starting word, thus using a lot of the most frequently used letters.
I may try tomorrow.

Liiisa "(I learned in a cryptography winter term class long ago that the most frequently used letters in English are ETOANRISH.)" Old linotype machines had 6-key rows of letters in order of frequency, of which the first two were ETAOIN SHRDLU, which often showed up as dummy text. (see also lorem ipsum)

The guy who runs the game has adjusted it so that antipodeans now get the new word first, rather than almost last.
The new word does show up at midnight, but we discovered (having been competing with my sister in the UK) that we were getting the word after she did. Then there was a very confusing day when we had a word she didn't, and after that it goes according to time zone. Edit: we worked this out after she really struggled with a word and couldn't understand how I managed to get a 'Q' correct as the first letter, without also getting the 'U'! She had query, we had... I don't even remember, something quite simple like drink.
Kneazle, I struggled with today's as well. I got it on line 6 but I don't think I can really claim it as my mum gave me a little hint.
And the american spelling one was annoying given he is british, it's known as a british game, and the website is a co.uk. I think I was 5/6 that day. I tried three other words with _a_or before finally getting it.
I also find pen and paper useful, Q.
Edit: (oops sorry!) Hal, my sister also tries to use our results grid to work out the answer. It made FAVOR quite an easy one for her... especially after my FB post that essentially told her it was american spelling, which she spotted in the brief period before I deleted it...
