In the last 1960s, my college friends and I played a similar game called Jotto. Two people played each other, with the first person getting the other's secret word the winner. By our rules, you only learned how many of the letters in the word you proposed were in the secret word, not which ones and whether any wee in the right locations. No repeated letters allowed in the secret word, so you could wind up guessing STALE and being told that all five letters were in the secret word but that that was not it, and then guessing STEAL before hitting on SLATE. When I was a kid, we had the Mastermind game, where you had to guess the colour combo the other person had--very much like Wordle, you would be told if your guess was dead wrong, right, or right colour/wrong space. It's a pretty common principle for games, I think, so would be hard to claim a complete copyright.

I once tried to play Mastermind with a friend who had blue-green colorblindness. Not really a good game for him.

That's true, not as a standalone word, but it's pretty common as parts of other words that are used a lot (trying not to spoiler anything!)

I'm ready to give it a rest. I'm getting there! A bunch of my mutuals on Twitter are obsessed with it! I came back from my walk to find like 30 notifications, all about Wordle. There are now 15 more.... It's still better than Spelling Bee tho

I do Spelling Bee but I won't subscribe. I find as many words as I can before they cut me off. Makes it manageable.

Given that everyone is now finished with 212, which was 'shire', it's a very common word in Australia used for local government areas. It's not very common in NZ (apart from 'The Shire' ala The Hobbit') but relatively common also in the UK (derbyshire, etc)

I got it in 3 rows, though, and nobody uses it for anything here in the US. But I read books.
