I am organising the staff Christmas party for work. Everyone pays for it themselves so no one is forced or obligated to go. Generally it is a dinner and drinking event. Anyway, one of the people said to me today that they wont eat anything on the set menu. The mains are 1) pheasant 2) venison 3) roast cod 4)butternut squash risotto. I thought it a bit odd. I know its not the normal one chicken, one beef, one fish option that is frequently on set menus but ..... then I love venison so I'm biased!
Out of that, is there many people here that wouldn't eat something?

I'm not the easiest of eaters, and I'd eat all of those! Mm, in fact it would be difficult to choose one.

four very different options - surely anyone would be able to chose from these? I'd chose any (though probably cod or the butternut squash) but then I'm an easy eater. i like everything.

The only thing I'd be wary of is the pheasant - just because I'm not sure how similar that is to quail, and I have massive problems with quail. I love it but it doesn't love me - after eating it I have to spend pretty much all of the next day in a bathroom. Has happened every time, regardless of how it was cooked, where I ate it etc etc So even though I'd love to try pheasant I'd probably only order when I know I don't have to be anywhere the next day, in case it is too similar to quail. The rest all sounds wonderful.

I'd have the cod - or try the pheasant. Personally not keen on venison myself the few times I had it. I find it a bit weird that both meat choices are rater unusual meats... Maybe she just doesn't know how they taste, and would be embarrassed if she doesn't like it.
For me it's usually the sides and sauces that make or break if I like a dish.
We have our christmas do next week and there wasn't one of the three dessert choices I liked, and although I ordered a starter I wasn't keen on it. But then I will be stuffed with the main course anyway so not bothered!

I'm a fussy eater - of that menu the only thing I would have is the risotto, not because I am a risotto fan but it would be my only option. The Venison, Pheasant and Cod imo are specialty or acquired taste foods and not to the liking of everyone.

I think it's a bit odd that both meat choices are a bit unusual but I would assume that even a fussy eater could go with the risotto unless there are some sort of allergies that you're not aware of?

I can see that pheasant and venison are unusually but I would have thought most people would have used it as an excuse to try something new.

I have a friend who doesn't eat anything other than garlic bread and chips. She's fun to go out to eat with (because I always get to choose where we go!! ;O)

Nope, not a vegan, or even a vegetarian. It's not a big deal really - she can either order off the menu or order of another menu. I'll talk to the restaurant and pre-warn them. But I did think it was bizarrely fussy.

Not everybody likes trying unfamiliar food, esp in a group setting. I am more happy to try something new at home and would be worried that I don't like it and then get looked at weirdly when I can't eat it. I would feel very embarrassed, esp because of the attitude you just show - for you it's bizarrely fuzzy, and I bet she already feels weird about it.
I know that I have felt awful in similar situations myself, I get that it can be annoying for others, which makes it harder for me. believe me, I have not chosen to be the way I am.
I find it totally bizarre how people can so easily put stuff in their mouth they don't know, without knowing if they will like the taste / can stand the texture!

I've been known to order things from menus that I don't know and can't pronounce. It's fun!! Even if I don't like the taste or texture too much (which rarely happens), I'll swallow the bite I have in my mouth and leave the rest. I ordered some odd things over the last few years and never spat anything out.

ha, i do that as well - pick the thing I don't know and see what I get when I'm in an adventurous mood. I guess since there's not a lot I don't like/don't eat, the risks are limited...

No allergies than I'm aware or care about. Poppy, cod an acquired taste? probably not really but a lot of people don't eat fish, your menu choice isn't imo catering for a wide range of tastes. I know a lot of people here (yes they are country bumpkins) who wouldn't eat any of those choices at all.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, you did provide four options. On the other hand, plenty of people are meat-and-potato kind of people, who expect meat to be a 'normal' kind of meat. If I were you I'd substitute either the venison or the pheasant for a beef or chicken dish.

I think a few people are misunderstanding. The menu is the restaurant's set menu -not my menu. I chose the restaurant, but the restaurant set the menu. I have spoken to the restaurant and let them know that there is one person who has an issue with the menu and they will accommodate her off their regular menu.
Rom, I find it interesting that you try new things at home but not out. I would never do that. I would never buy something to cook that I haven't had before. I suppose( to me) I guess in a restaurant you have a better chance of trying the new thing as best as possible because it has been cooked by a professional that knows what they are doing. (Hopefully)

OK, trying to explain myself here. I know I have food issues - there are certain tastes and textures that I simply cannot get down. For most people if they get something they don't like, they can still eat it - for me it could be the case of I order something, and then am physically not able to eat it - which I would find very very difficult / embarrassing in a public setting in front of other people. So if I am curious about something I try it at home first. I have introduced tons of new foods to my diet in the last decade, and sometimes had to force myself to try something multiple times at home until I either started to be ok with it / enjoy it or knew for sure it's not for me.
Nowadays there is loads of food I know I like, there is loads of food I know I might like or not but know I will be able to eat either way (food I eat when served but would not cook myself if that makes sense) - but there is also food I am unsure off, and stuff I know I would not get down. So when confronted with something totally new I would not want to make a fool out of myself in front of others.
It's slightly different when I am traveling, as I don't really mind not finishing a meal when I eat at a relaxed traveler kind of place instead of proper restaurant, so I tried lots of new stuff in India and Asia.
I wish I would be happy to eat anything, but that's not the way I am, it's one of my limitations that I just simply have to deal with, and work on overcoming in steps (and I came a long way!). But there are, and I guess always will be, foods that I can't even think of touching without feeling nauseous, it's mainly a texture thing with me - but that's ok, I don't need to eat everything, and it's easy to avoid them.
I posted all that because I get annoyed often when people just judge others as being fussy - as if its' something they do to annoy them, something they could easily change, and I am trying to explain that for some of us it's not about attention seeking or anything like that, it's a real issue. I still get a cold feeling in my tummy thinking back at a few times where I ended up in a restaurant or with a meal I knew I could not eat without getting sick - and I was really mortified in front of others, especially when they went to the effort of cooking!

I wouldn't love that menu. I don't eat venison or pheasant, and I don't like butternut squash. I'd order the fish and hope for the best.
I'm fussy about meat. Like romily, there are some foods/textures that I cannot get down, and that does limit my ordering sometimes. I almost always eat vegetarian when I'm out, unless it's a restaurant I know and trust.

Even when I ate meat I wouldn't have been keen on the menu to be honest... As a vegetarian that's even harder, I'd have to go with the risotto even though I don't like butternut squash, but that's how it usually goes, at least there is a vegetarian option..
I tend to agree that a set menu should have at least one 'ordinary' meat option.

I have a lot of food restrictions (mostly allergies, but other issues too) and I'd be ok with that menu. (Assuming it's not all topped with nuts or something.) I'd have the cod, and if that wasn't possible I would eat a few bites of one of the other things. But I'm pretty weird, I gather, in that I'm totally fine with just drinks and the little side salad, or a slice of bread, or whatever. I don't understand people who need A FULL MEAL THEY REALLY LIKE 3x/day. And they don't understand me either, because they are the ones who make it weird and awkward when you're not eating, or only eating a little. It would be nice if more social events were structured like "Some people will eat, some won't, and that's ok."
What am I even doing in the food section... *exists slowly*
