ha! Never thought of that! First time I forgot about oil in the pan when making popcorn. Second time it was something under the grill. They were just flamey smokey stuff...not full on fire.

I have to resurrect this thread to post about a baking disaster. Not mine, it was someone baking something for the morning tea at LC's school. She was making muffins, and accidentally sprayed WD40 on the muffin tray instead of cooking oil. Somehow she didn't notice the smell when she did it, and it was only as the smell of heated WD40 wafted through the house she realised her mistake.

That made me laugh.
I have had another disaster - I doubled a cake recipe and it took so long to cook in the middle, the outside and bottom were, ahem, a tad overcooked (black!).
I cut the black bits off and it was delicious, though.

We were having visitors - important ones, and I made a sponge. With passionfruit icing and apricot jam and whipped cream in the middle. Couldn't work out why it didn't rise. It was like rubber. I'd used plain flour instead of S.R. flour. Oh dear.

I made pork belly with crackling. TEB's dad had some issue with the petrol station and dinner was kept waiting and waiting. The pork belly was great, but the crackling was black :-( Didn't watch it closely enough.

i took a second run at what looks like a great recipe for choc chip cookies; chewy and lumpy/bumpy. i have made that sort of cookie before. they tasted good, but went completely flat. i should have said 'sod this recipe' and added more flour but i was convinced they just needed one less minute or more/less heat. annoyed.
