we went a few years ago.
eat pizza. lots of pizza. the truffles are pretty good too.
we rented a car in zagreb, then drove to rovinj, then down the coast to paklenica (good hiking/climbing), but didn't make it to dubrovnik. we then went inland up to see the plitvice "lakes" which were stunning, and then on to samobar area. there's a castle of some sort, i can't remember the name.
that was the worst part of the holiday--we hadn't realised it was the last saturday of the summer and we were on the motorway to the border. i think we spent 3 hrs moving 10km--the only turn off was just before the border. argh. we actually screamed with relief when we left. and we were the only ones not going through the border that we could see. we only got 30 minutes to walk around the castle when we would have like a couple of hours.

Thank you. I was looking at flights at the weekend but still haven't booked.
Does anyone else have Croatia tips?
Thanks again.

when are you going? I would love to go. I've been promising a friend in Split I would visit her for about a decade. Really. Sigh.

A friend and I had a week in Croatia, split between Split (ha!) and Dubrovnik. And we took a side trip to Mostar in between, which is quite simple to do on the bus - and the journey is exceptionally scenic.
Dubrovnik is a favourite cruise destination. So it can be packed out for quite a bit of the day. The walk around the walls and other popular attractions are best done early in the morning or late afternoon/early evening, when people have gone back to their ships.
The port has a website which has a calendar to say how many ships and how many cruise passengers are going to be in town each day. It's colour coded and really helpful. On a red day,get out of town from mid morning to late afternoon. Save your daytime town exploring for the green days.
A ferry trip to Lopud or another of the quiet islands is a great thing to do on red days.

I've just been looking at long weekends in Croatia. When are you thinking of going?

Thanks all. I hadn't realised there were other responses.
We're thinking of going mid-September.

that should be nicer. we went in mid august and it was sweltering.
the island of pag was nice as a day trip. when we were there, i seem to recall a lot of bamboo or something growing, so it looked like the moon as you came over to the island, but once there the interior was full of green!
