I’m doing a bit of research for my trip in September and am a bit confused as to what you should wear in Indonesia (Java and Sulawesi). Some sites say cover your head, others say that’s not necessary. I was thinking short-sleeve tops and skirts, but will knee-length be ok or should I invest in a couple of long skirts (the humidity is pretty high so I’m thinking not trousers). If you’ve been, any tips? Thanks

I had no problems in Indonesia in my usual gear, no head covers needed. I tended towards t-shirts/covered shoulders until I got a feeling for the particular area I was in (then did wear tank tops). I think I mostly stuck with longer skirts, but that's my travel norm anyway- they're not hot, and you're not flashing your underwear when climbing in and out of taxis or up stairs or temples. It's really comfortable.

Because of the sun, I wore a light long sleeve top (one of those special ones made for sun protection, so it wasn't hot) often, I bought a beautiful silk batik shawl there which I used for a couple of temples (this was in Bali). I also wore a longish shirt or culottes.

Sophie's shawl suggestion is a good one. Buy a couple of sarongs when you get there, as they can double as everything from a head cover to a skirt, to a light sheet.

Shawl is a good idea, I've got one light scarf that has multiple uses. Will look out for a couple more long skirts in the sales. Thanks all
