TB and I will be in the UK next May, after doing two busy week long tours. Trying to decide how to spend our last 5 nights before heading home. I will have to spend a couple of nights in London as he likes the tube and the buses but would like to have a couple of nights somewhere a bit more relaxed. I like York and would like to go somewhere similar but somewhere closer to London and somewhere easy to get to from Ireland. Your suggestions appreciated

thanks, Bath is a consideration and fits my criteria, hoping for somewhere a bit different and somewhere possibly I haven't been to.

Do Bath, and I'll come up to see you there! Easier and cheaper for me than London.
How about Liverpool from Ireland?

How about Liverpool from Ireland? sounds like a plan - Liverpool is probably the most obvious but for some reason it doesn't appeal, stayed there some years back and it just didn't have that old feel that places like York/Bath have.

Guildford? Close to London, Heathrow etc and has a nice feel, yet not too far away to involve lots more travel.

Oxford or Cambridge of course (Cambridge is better).
Canterbury or Salisbury are two other good places.

Cambridge, yes.45 minutes by train from London Kings Cross. Go punting, tour the colleges, picnic in the parks. Compact and lovely old centre. Many of the shops and restaurants are in old banks.
Another option could be Edinburgh. Lots of flights from Ireland, and 10 quid/one hour flights to Stansted.

I'm about to press the button on a rtw to see my boys in NYC, and on the way there I aim to do my first ever visit to UK in late March early April. One place that has taken my fancy is Shrewsbury, because of its connection to Father Cadfael, and its proximity to Ironbridge and its industrial revolution heritage. (I was a civil engineer for 20 years)

Jimm, you might enjoy brunel's bridges in bristol. there's a ship there as well, which i think is one of his. this summer i walked along one of Telford's viaducts in Wales; that was amazing. i can recommend a lovely little airBnB cottage in the fields outside Much Wenlock, which is only a few miles from ironbridge.

Aarrggh! sprite! Decisions decisions - I have only recently decided to go to Shrewsbury instead of Bath/Bristol ... maybe I can fit in both. I would enjoy seeing Brunel's bridges.
And please PM me the airBnB info.
I was not planning on renting a car, but might have to just to get around this area.

i was thinking, a car would really be best. it's possible to do by public transport, but would involve a lot of planning. how much time do you have?

Actually it looks like it might work - I've pencilled in 2 nights in Shrewsbury and 3 nights in Bath/Bristol. I've got a bit of slack I can redistribute.
Anyway, any more should be another thread.

Bath is lovely. Bristol is a fine city too. In Bristol check out Brooks Guesthouse. I've stayed there a couple of times for, work and pleasure. It's in a good place, very pleasant, much more like a hotel than a b&b but with none of the facilities I never use and it's good value.
