O ye Australians:
I came across a cute photo on Mastodon of a juvenile wallaby standing beside a stump. The text said that he was "enjoying his pellets."
Is this like birdseed, that you can go to a store and buy Wallaby Pellets for if one wanders into your yard?
(I suppose I could have looked this up or asked the guy who posted it, but thought it would be more amusing to bother you folks instead)

Well that of course was my first thought when I saw the term "pellets," because of owl pellets. But would it be enjoying them?
You can google "wallaby coprophagy" if you want, I'm not going to, nope

Pretty sure the answer is "yes" it is for lots of herbivores but I'm not googling to check...

Sure, I know; but would a wallaby hop up onto a stump and poop and then climb down again in order to use the stump as a little poop dinette?
It doesn't make sense to me, though i am glad to have had the opportunity to coin the phrase "little poop dinette."

Barastoc Kangaroo and Wallaby Pellet is a nutritious and balanced pelleted feed for the supplementary feeding of kangaroos and wallabies.

And wallaby excrement does not come in pelletized form; it comes as watery globs.

In NZ they'd probably be poison pallets.
They're one of the animals on the list of 'wouldn't it be cute if these were in NZ/wouldn't it be fun if we could hunt these'.

You could write a long list like this for Australia (although I acknowledge NZ's pain) Rabbits Foxes Feral pigs Feral deer Feral horses Feral camels Feral water buffalo Feral cats Wild dogs (not dingoes) Carp We are losing our unique wildlife (to extinction) at an alarming rate. Particularly the little marsupials who get eaten by cats. It's devastating really. And also, it's against the law to feed wildlife here in WA (not sure about the rest of Australia) Feeding native animals is now an offence under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. It can alter natural behaviours, aid in the proliferation of pest species and, in some cases, cause animals to become aggressive towards people.

And on a more light hearted note, when my friend's daughter was around 18 months we went on a picnic to a national park, lots of lovely lawned area included, where we lazed around and drank, ate and chatted. Only to discover that said small child had discovered kangaroo poo and was trying it out. It was a lovely round shape, just like maltesers!

Interesting wombat - I wonder if this guy shouldn't be feeding pellets to this wombat wallaby then.
I don't think feeding is illegal anywhere here? I should know this. But it's discouraged - signs in lots of parks here telling people to stop giving bread to the ducks and geese because it's bad for them and also makes them act weird.

I remember a funny interaction with a kangaroo in the petting section of the Adelaide Zoo when I was there with our then 8 year old son. I chose not to buy a bag of pellets to feed the critters when we when in there. I got told off by the kangaroo.

I wonder if the original wallaby was in a wildlife park or hospital? In those places, food pellets would be used.

I have been incarcerated in three different hospitals over the past few months but have never seen a wallaby, perhaps I was given the wrong medication.
