Is there anyone here that has sufficient geographical familiarity with Paris that could give us some advice?
TEB's dad really wants us to go to Paris when we come over later this year. I don't want to, but everyone else is fine with it so I will take one for the team.
If we go to Paris, the kids are going to assume this will mean a visit to disneyland. However, although it's called Paris disneyland, it actually doesn't seem to be that close to Paris. The places that we would ideally stay in Paris would be more in the centre, and this is looking to me like a 90 minute journey or thereabouts to get to disneyland. That doesn't sound like a fun day to me at all.
Anyone able to advise? Happy to PM more details about likely locations, other activities, etc.
My concern is that TEB's dad is making the disneyland thing sound feasible because it means he is more likely to get his way.

I definitely think you should go to Paris; just stay there and hang out in cafes and let the rest of them go to Disneyland.
I have no idea where Disneyland is vis-a-vis Paris, I'm just running my mouth over here.

Oh my god. fabulous idea.
the grandparents wanted to take the kids to paris by themselves, which I said no to (absolutely no way would they manage) but a day trip to disneyland sounds ideal!!!

Are you sure it will take that long to get to Disneyland? From what I can tell by a quick Google it should be a bit quicker than that but feck knows, I've never been.

A quick Google search shows both bus and train from Paris to Disneyland in well under an hour, and a TGV from CDG airport in 12 minutes, fares from €2-8.
How much is the train to Paris from Disneyland? Disneyland Paris to Paris train services, operated by Paris RER, depart from Marne-la-Vallée Chessy station. Train or bus from Disneyland Paris to Paris? The best way to get from Disneyland Paris to Paris is to bus which takes 37 min and costs €2 - €8. Alternatively, you can train, which costs €4 - €6 and takes 40 min.

We did go years ago, and the travel from Paris wasn't that long, but I can't remember what part of Paris we were staying in.

I've spent two birthdays in Paris.
Neither of which included a visit to Disneyland. Sorry.

I've stayed in both Orlando and Anaheim for various reasons and never went to Disneyland/world, so if I can find those rather unattractive places more attractive than Disney (I mean people call Anaheim "Anaslime"), then you can imagine how I'd feel about Paris.
I don't really like Disney or rides, so it's a nonstarter for me.

I went once to Disneyland when Mr.W was on sabbatical in CA and daughter was 7. A CA friend was working for a company that gave out a special pass with which you could buy a book of all top price ride tickets at a bargain price. The friend lent us the pass and told us the best, i.e. least crowded, time to go, which we did.
It was fun, but daughter got bored because none of it was REAL or genuinely interactive. There was one Jungle Cruise where you could actually help paddle the boat which she liked. So, been there, done that. Daughter much preferred the national parks. Way to go, kiddo!
I looked up the transit info just to keep my Google skills in shape and find out just how long a trip it was.
I wish I could join you at a café and pub crawl!

I went to DisneyWorld the year it opened. I was 7. It was amazing for me as a 7 year old. I went back when I was 15. Meh.
I went to Paris as an adult. It was like going to grown up Disneyland where I got to see amazing art, eat fabulous food, see historic sites. I've gone to Paris. It was still amazing.
Disneyland can be a day trip from Paris but Paris is NEVER a bad idea. You know what else is day trip from Paris - Versailles.

We went to Disneyland when I was 28 and we both enjoyed it. We were headed toward Disney World a few years later, but Jude was feeling a bit pregnant so we pulled the pin and went home - we'd already been on the road for around 2 months.
I've never been to Paris Disneyland, but just maybe I'd prefer it to Versailles, which I have visited and found to be pretty light on adventure rides.

I'll admit that I loved Disneyland. Proper Disneyland in Anaheim. I would go to Disneyland Paris too if it wasn't for the fact there are so many places in or near Paris I would want to go to first rhay I just can't justify it.

With a two day pass, I went to Disneyland Tokyo in 2016 and loved it. I also went to Disneysea. You’re never too old to go to Disneyland, one of the best things, the rides are designed to carry adults and I had the most fun in the planes that go around in a circle and a man about my age, told me if you press this button your plane goes up and down. We were like children. It was the most fun I have ever had in my entire life.
And the boat ride to the tune of “It’s a Small World” seems to go on forever - like at least ten minutes. Everybody buys a pair of fancy ears or headgear and wears it, I did that too, the fact that I’ve never worn them anywhere else doesn’t matter Inwore them than and had a ball.
So Lisa, if you have a chance to go to Disneyland, please go, it is such fun. Then again I was the child who watched “The Mickey Mouse Show” in the very late 50’s early 60’s with Annette, Bobby, etc and longed with all my little heart for a pair of black Mickey Mouse ears and to go to Disneyland!

That does sound like fun. I'm a cranky old woman who would rather read a book and drink wine than be buffeted about to music that I don't like.

Disney stuff never appealed to me after about 12. Maybe it wasn't so huge then? Of course the chance of us going there was about -99. I did get to go to a big commercial amusement park a couple of times. Other than the ride where you got splashed, I don't remember much. Country kid, we had local fairs.

We had a Disney record as kids but no TV, I think my mom would have terrible flashbacks if she had to got to a Disneyland. In my new class today, one of the students has been to Disney Tokyo TEN TIMES.
My nephew and his GF are going to Disney Paris, but they're staying nearby. This might be a compromise; stay near the park the first night, Grandparents spend the day there with the kids, and then they take the train back to your new digs in the city. It might be easier to move any luggage without kids to wrangle as well.

Those tea cups gave me motion sickness. Admittedly a lift/elevator can also make me woozy so I don't think the cups are to blame.

It might be easier to move any luggage without kids to wrangle as well. that has been discussed, but we are travelling with a child that hates change, and we've already agreed that one thing we will need to do so that this trip is bearable for all of us is that we need to base ourselves in one place for as long as possible, and do day trips from there with some/all of us. So, no. It would be one night of not much sleep, with another night following of being overtired and very grumpy, so I'll take a long day trip over two very unhappy evenings.

Transport to and from Disneyland was no problem for me, I purposely booked a hotel that offered the free Disney shuttle from the hotel every day. If I had had to worry about getting public transport there and back, it would have been a different story. I stayed at the Oriental Hotel Tokyo Bay, Tokyo. Lisa does your Paris hotel have the free shuttle?

Lisa does your Paris hotel have the free shuttle? WE haven't booked anywhere yet but it's very unlikely we'll be staying in a hotel; we're looking at self-catering places. I don't really care if it's free or not, it's about the time it takes. I'm fine with public transport, I just don't want it to be taking more than about an hour to get there, that's about the limit. And if I can get myself out of going to disneyland I absolutely will be. It's my idea of hell on earth, to be honest. Pretty much the last thing I want to be spending a day of our holiday doing. But the kids really really want to go. I've found a bunch of theme/activity parks elsewhere but nothing has quite the allure of disneyland.

Maybe you should just go because seeing your kids joy at being there might be worth it.Or can you talk them into Parc Asterix.
Either way it's only about an hour to each from Paris.
You keep saying how horrible it would be for you but think about all the things you make them do that they think are horrible.
How much of this vacation have they been allowed to plan?
