So we may be looking for a new Receptionist already.
The new hire who started the first week of January has already been late most days, taken a day off, called in sick for the past 3 days and asked for 2 weeks off in February.
I don't understand the balls on some people. Who doesn't try to make a good impression the first months of a job?
She asked if she could work from home one day a week? Hello, you're a receptionist. Your job is to be in the office every day to deal with daily stuff that has to go on in the office.

Wow, this is the second dud receptionist you've had? That's very weird. You can't be a receptionist from home!

Yeah we have a policy that our customer service/Admin team who answer the calls and cover reception can't work from home because it's just not feasible.
If you've had two bad hires in a row you need to look at your recruitment practices though.

That sounds like a story from my sister's office. They go out for lunch and never come back.

No, we had 2 bad temps (also people who didn't want to work) and then S, who was brilliant. Her first job out of college and she really stepped up. But she out grew the position. So they were searching and offered to someone who took a better paying position. So they chose this chick. I do agree our recruitment team sucks. But also the hiring manager is no leader (she's the other EA in the office). I'm convinced she hired her out of desperation.

We don't require message taking (I don't think we have a main number). We do require an 8am to 4:30pm attendance, 5 days a week.

Hope you find a good new person.
I was an excellent receptionist as well and have been a switchboard operator too. I'd be available in June except I'm kind of over working and no longer have any grownup clothes to wear.
My office no longer has any receptionist at all - people sign in with the security guy at the desk in the lobby. So if you don't have a specific person you're meeting with who can come fetch you, you're not getting in. You can't even get past the first floor without a fob for the elevator.

My student work job was as a receptionist for the science dept. I had to patch through calls. Except 2 labs didn't have phones and I had to go get people. That was aggravating. Looking back, easy job that paid for my beer and sandwiches through college.
