I used to hear him when I was living in Boston in the seventies. The guest conductors of the BSO at the time were Colin Davis and Klaus Tennstedt, and I liked them better.
Hardly a woman in the Philharmonic in those days, and it seemed entirely natural.

I sang in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus for a few of Seiji's early years under Seiji and various guest conductors. Seiji was great at the French repertoire and other more recent works but was outdone at Mozart, Beethoven and other classics by some of the guests. I agree with vinnyd, and would add Kurt Mazur. That was also about the time when the BSO introduced auditions behind a screen and the number of women quickly increased.
