Jude had one in the late 1960s - early 1970s. It was very attractive, as was Jude.

Tzarine, every link you give, I get a 404 Bad Gateway and can never see what it is you are showing! P.S. ETA: Your link works in my quote - weird?

Hats are such an English (or former English) thing! I can't remember ever seeing a man in a hat, only in pictures from before the war (eg 20s/30s).
I have no idea what to wear to my nephews confirmation - at the christening of he kids I wore a dress, but can't really now as I can't wear smart shoes or heels. My BIL wore black jeans, a geeky t-shirt and a blazer... I am wondering if I can get away with dark jeans, a nice top and dark blue trainers, or if I have to change into ballet pumps for in the church only as I can't walk in them and it's a 20 min walk to the church.

Oh I do so relate, rom. In case you're interested in trying a different pair of ballet flats - I managed to find a pair that while I won't walk any distance in them, I can at least attend a fancy event in them - they're by Arcopedico and are kind of stretchy with some minor arch support. Page 7 here (I can't find a page with just them on the website): arcopedico.com/en/catalogue/

You can wear anything that’s reasonably modest in my church. Dresses are entirely optional. As are formal shoes. This morning we had a male keyboard player in his 70s up front in shorts, a long sleeved polo shirt (because it was cool), loafers and short socks with Melbourne trams on them. We have two ladies in their seventies who always wear heels and quite fancy dresses, but others who always wear jeans and trainers. I usually wear dresses, because I prefer them, but with flat sandals or slip on shoes. I haven’t worn any kind of stockings or tights for decades.
Incidentally, in the days when women wore hats to church, men had to remove theirs.

It's really less the other church goes I care about but my sister's bloody judgement. I need to learn to not give a shit about that, but it's not easy. Lovely idea Liisa but I'll be damned if I spend even more money on this event, it already cost me over €500 just for flights and accommodation!
It will also depend on the weather - first weekend in May can be anything. I think if it's warm I will wear flip flops when walking to the church, and then change into ballet flats just for the service. If it's too cold for that, not sure - I am flying there so don't want to take lots of shoes. May wear my hiking trainers to walk to church and change there. I have some nicer shoes for colder weather but really don't want to stuff my suitcase with multiple shoes.

On somewhat formal occassions I've been known to wear a white suit and a sword, but I would never wear these to the opera - unless, that is, I was a cast member and it was necessary. When I come to think of it, I have worn a sword on stage - as Sergius, in "Arms and the Man". And did you have a hat like this? Or a pith helmet?

Neither. A few feathers would have been nice. My father was in the Light Horse a few thousand years ago and he got to wear emu feathers in his hat - but all I had was a plain cap with a QE2 badge, without scrambled eggs.

Speaking of hats, groo - a felt hat was part of school uniform for boys in secondary school in NSW when I was a kid. The only exception was at posh schools, where they wore boaters. Attachments:

I saw a man wearing a boater the last time I was in Rome, c 10 years ago. Not as part of a costume or anything. I don't think he was Italian.

I thought the prairie dress thing was last year? I know in 2022 women here were going mad for oversized dresses worn with bright white flat sneakers, like converse-tennis-style. Which was handy for me, as I had some stuff in that sort of style, but also meant that when I tried to buy a dress for my sister's fall wedding, I ended up in the charity shops. I wasn't going to wear a dress that fits like a sail while standing on a cliff top! But it looks like the 'sneakers with dresses' trend is staying put, so I'm a happy duck.

Ah yes, work boots with dresses! I only did that once (army boots and a navy calf-length slip dress), but I wish i'd had better work boots.

Wear whatever feels best on your feet. Is the Priest really going to be looking at your feet? Imagine your sister’s face - “Oh my God, look at those dreadful shoes poor XXX’s sister is wearing. In the House of God too!”
