First I thought a plane had crashed and then I thought there was a giant truck going down the street and then I thought, holy shit was that just my building or the whole fucking world.

I just heard about it — glad you’re ok! I know people down here who felt it -( for some reason, east coast ones propagate more than west coast ones)

Blahblahblah I'm from cali no biggie -
Excuse me but it was 30 seconds of being shaken like I was on a roller coaster just sitting on my sofa and it freaked me the fuck out.

Glad you're safe, webs. Any damage to your building?
I didn't feel it but I read that it had been felt around Boston.

No damage but it triggered an anxiety attack. I've never experienced an earthquake before.

Webs when you're not used to them, they're terrifying. Even a small aftershock I experienced after a big one caused the chandelier overhead in the shitty restaurant we were in to swing crazily back and forth; boss and I dived under the restaurant table while all the Angelenos continued calmly eating their lunch.

I just heard about it — glad you’re ok! I know people down here who felt it -( for some reason, east coast ones propagate more than west coast ones) NPR said just now that it was because of the different character of the rock on the two coasts. The reporter didn't go into detail.

Yes, that's what I remember reading after the 2011 North Anna quake, which I think I remember people felt as far north as Maine!

There were Canadians who say they felt the 2011 quake. Long way from Virginia.
An actual geologist over on the Stew says that the fact the rock on the East Coast is older and denser than West Coast rock is the main reason, and that the other is that the numerous faults on the West Coast keep the waves from traveling as far. So they get more frequent and more intense quakes, but also more localized.

I remember similar posts when there was a minor earthquake in Auckland. We barely felt it the way the media reported it made the rest of the (very earthquake prone) country complain about soft Aucklanders.

I love that "we will rebuild" joke; it comes up whenever there's an East Coast earthquake.
The RWNJs are all like "this earthquake and the solar eclipse are signs that we must repent!" Um sure. Go read a science textbook, idiots.

I find earthquakes scary and I'm used to them. Well as used to anything that comes out of the blue and scares the living crap out of you.
I think it is 100% ok to have been worried after an earthquake when you're living in a place that doesn't get them often. All sorts of things here are built or made with earthquakes in mind and I'm still spooked by them.

I was just waking up at a summer program in Indiana, wondering why a huge fleet of trucks was driving so nearby and shaking my bed. I got up and went to breakfast with my friends in a Russian language immersion course where everyone was learning a new Russian word, earthquake, which I remember to this day. Talk about traumatic imprinting...
землетрясение FYI

Despite coming from the shaky isles, the first earthquake I was ever in was in San Francisco.
I was the only person in a 6 person dorm and I woke up because my bunk was moving like someone was moving around on the top bunk. It took me a bit to realise that since I was in San Fran it was probably an earthquake. Sure enough next morning found out it was.
