Daughter turns fifty tomorrow - I cannot believe I (will) have a fifty year old daughter! I’m told her other half is taking her out for dinner. I bought a card haven’t written on it yet, had I been smart, I would have already had a gift and taken both to her place on Easter Sunday! One year I did give her a very pretty coffee mug with Daughter on it, which she threw out, another time I was in the country and bought some hand crafted items from a boutique, they also were thrown out, a box of chocolates is safer - at least they don’t get thrown out.
Any suggestions will be helpful and debated on in this head of mine. My budget is $30.

Don't buy decorative stuff that may not be her taste. Chocolates is safer. Or maybe wine/beer if you know what she likes.
Or something that would actually appeal to her specific tastes or interests. A gift card to a movie theater if she likes movies. A gift card to a bookstore if she likes books. A gift card to a spa if she likes spas. Or to a specific restaurant or museum or coffeeshop or flower shop or cooking-supply store, etc.

Right, what shilgia said. By the time we're 50 we know the stuff we like and buy it for ourselves. If this is the daughter you often have trouble with, maybe a very small thing of very good chocolate and a gift card. (Nothing but a gift card sets some people off.)

Whatever you do wont be right for her so prepare for that now. Not sure if you have the prezzie card set up there but you you can buy them online..and you are good at that.. have it delivered and they can be used anywhere that takes eftpos.

I was going to suggest that, but it felt cruel. Nonetheless, it had to be said.

Good idea about the chocolate, Liiisa. I have been thinking I might get her a box of Mozart’s Balls.

OK so. It's a major birthday for your daughter, you struggle to choose presents for people and you are asking the day before?
I'm great with presents and I would never leave it that late especially for a significant birthday.

I'm great with presents and I would never leave it that late especially for a significant birthday. Some time ago, I bought jigsaws online for certain family members either birthday and/or Christmas. One of those (1,000 pieces) was for my daughter - it is of Flinders Street Station, one of the most iconic sights of Melbourne. I find out from gd she would not be interested. Gd offered to look online and tell me which ones her mother would like. Fine, says I. Gd said she forgot or hasn’t had time. And so……we wait!

It seems you have very different tastes... Seriously ask Gd to choose something.
At this point I'd send her a bunch of her favourite flowers, or flowers in her favourite colour.

And unless I knew someone was into jigsaw puzzles I'd never buy one...

Give her money.
Unless you know what she would really like then I think money might be the best option.
If you can afford it, $50. $1 for every year. I dunno. But considering some of the tension over the years I want to suggest you do something nice for your daughter but I suspect it could be a bit of a drama and stressful.
So give her money.

My daughter is “into” jigsaw puzzles. I reminded gd when she rang about the jigsaws to which she replied she hadn’t looked but will do now and would ring me back. Her mother must have been near her because she chipped in, told me the one she wanted - it was $29.00. A Buffalo jigsaw a Charles Wysocki, 1,000 piece puzzle. Being a prime member delivery is free, I changed the name and address for sending and daughter will receive it Tuesday. Her parting words were if you did this yesterday it would have come tomorrow! Ha! We’re both happy, she’s getting something she likes and wanted, I gave her something she likes and it didn’t cost more than my budget.
