My former boss told me once that they had one in his house growing up. I’d never heard of one!
I was just reflecting on how I never knew anyone who hand-washed clothes like that. I knew people who didn’t have washers, of course, but they took their things to a laundromat.
Is this just that I’m younger or more urban?

Mangles pre-dated permanent press, which eliminated most of their usefulness.

Old Australian (and possibly elsewhere, afaik) colloquial expression: "Funniest thing since Ma caught her tits in the mangle". collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/256746In the early 50s our neighbours had one like this on their back verandah. We were more upmaket, trendies really, and had a wringer like Phar's mother.

The outside laundry in my childhood house had concrete tubs with a wringer like Phar's, as well as an electric washing machine and a copper boiler.
The copper boiler was a tub was built into a brick thing with a fire place underneath it. It was occasionally used to boil the bed linen, and sometimes the xmas ham and old chooks (probably where the term 'old boilers' - used to describe tough older women - comes from.)

Yep. That's our place, too.

We had a copper, 2 tubs with a wringer between and a copper, but I don’t remember it being used, as we got an electric washing machine when I was very young. Our laundry was indoors.

It's a holiday but I have work to do. I mean, I could choose not to do it, and do it Tuesday, but I either have it hanging over my head, or give up a holiday day.
hmmm

We had an electric washing machine with a wringer, which in theory stopped if the balance wasn't right, or the load was too thick. In practice it didn't, and the are handle I used to lift the sheets out of the hot water in the machine sailed straight through the wringer and out the window. Closed of course.

I have had a little too much caffeine this morning and also was listening to a really great record (Prolapse, "The Italian Flag"), and so I came raging into our parking lot a little too enthusiastically. And now the left front tire is looking a little low so I must pay for my sins by filling it with air and hoping I didn't damage it by crashing into the curb.

Partner opened the toilet paper package last time. He opened it from the bottom, like some sort of psychopath. it sits on a shelf near the toilet (no cupboards in the bathroom), so every time I use the toilet I have to look at a package opened WRONG.
I'm a woman on the edge.

Picked up library books, and I get a notification an hour later that the next hold on the list is available.

Computer madness!
I had to get a new external hard drive to back up my computer. I spent most of yesterday afternoon on the phone with AppleCare and more time this morning. Error messages galore. My old external wasn't loading, all sorts of nonsense, couldn't do further backups, assorted reasons popping up in little boxes. Recommended system upgrade didn't help. Very long story, very short: hang onto the old one as an archive and start fresh. The new one should be delivered tomorrow. Installation and backup either tomorrow or Wednesday. So I spent some time this afternoon decluttering my computer, knowing that some stoff is already archived on the old external.
Not my idea of a party. My eyes are killing me.

I moved my garbage bins (we have 3) out of the back patio when I put the house on the market, so it would look prettier in the photos. My problem is, after all the rain I have to walk across a very boggy back lawn to get to them. Next trip, I’m taking my walking stick.

I have just received a stack of paperwork to do with my upcoming surgery. All sorts of things to do, medical tests to get, things to buy or organize. I will start tomorrow with getting some of the medical tests done.. they will be out of the way then. I also need to watch a couple of videos .. try and do that soon. I may start bitching about this soon!!

All the blood work, x rays etc done.. I went to the hospital early and it paid off. Minimal wait. Ozzie, I think they want all the tests done ahead of time in case there are issues.. at least with people like myself who have an ‘interesting’ medical history!

Yes, mine were done at the hospital a week before the surgery. Even a chest X-Ray.

Everything is trying to automate everything and it's driving me NUTS. Evernote, if I type asterisks, it means I want ASTERISKS, not a horizontal rule. I'd switch to OneNote over this but of course Microsoft is even more infested with AI than this. Do I have to go back to a paper notebook? *&%$%$#^&&

The new computers at the Woolworths checkouts are glitching, and wouldn’t weigh my capsicum, which was the last item to be scanned, so I got it for free.

OK - it's all my fault. I am not eating well at the moment and a couple of times I have left bananas to moulder in the fruit bowl and now my house is filled with fruit flies.
I thought back to the days of my youth and remembered the glass fruit fly traps that we used to bait and hang in our fruit trees, but when I went to our local farm goods supplier for some I was treated with derision, offered 20 litre packs of earth endangering chemicals and told that my conduct was jeapordising my chances of a 2025 free calendar.
So now I have reverted to the ways of my father in the 1950s when mosquitos were a problem- of an evening I walk around the affected areas spraying insecticides, except that I do not need to use a hand pump.

I have gotten so fed up with AI that I'm considering moving from Evernote to another similar app. I have TWELVE YEARS worth of notes in Evernote, however. UGH
