Anyone else watching His Dark Materials - Episode 1 was really good. Not yet, but I'm really looking forward to it! Need to find out where I can watch it though... I watched episode 2 on HBO last night. If you thought Nicole Kidman was sinister as Mrs. Coulter - You'll be calling Ruth Wilson "Anne" before the end of the episode. She literally invokes the essence of Anne Coulter in this version, and you won't be able to do anything but hate her from the get go.

I enjoyed Season 1 of The Crown, started watching Season 2. I liked the first season better.
BBC First have been running Agathe Christie's Poirot and Miss Marple series again which I am so enjoying, especially if I have forgotten whodunit.
Ditto for Midsomer Murders, I do like the earlier series with Seargent Troy as Inspector Barnaby's off-sider. The things that come out of his mouth are brilliant, just brilliant! He does have a way with the English language!

Sanditon, based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, is on BBC here.

I enjoyed Sanditon, but got the feeling they're angling for a second series. It's not Austen, but it's a reasonably good period drama--I found most of the plots believable, although no one of the time would have written them.
We've just finishe 'dirk gently' on netflix, season one, and that was good fun. we spent most of it trying to work out what the hell is going on, which is pretty much what all the main characters do. i enjoyed watching various relationships develop.
we're now into 'the name of the rose' on bbc, and we are still asking what hte hell is going on... but that's because it seems to be a complex bit of history with a lot of philosophy/theology popping up. if partner could stop falling asleep, we could watch more...

I just watched the third season of Marvelous Mrs. Masel. When she's doing stand-up, it's hysterical. When they show her life outside of stand-up it was a bit painful to watch.
The scenes in Forest Hills are actually filmed in a house in Forest Hills Gardens.
I'm a bit tired of how much of a snob she is (her children won't go to school in Queens!) One of the best private schools in the city is within walking distance of the house used in the series. And she naively thought the rest of the band was going to be staying in the same hotel! She doesn't address race at all except when she's put out, at the Apollo.
If they don't give her a little more sense in the next season, I'm out.

I enjoyed the 3rd season. Not as good as the 1st 2, but enjoyable none-the-less.

But was it one of the best private schools in the city back in 1959 - 60?

In 1959/1960 Kew Forest School was one of the best schools in the city (still is).
And the public schools were and are still some of the best in the city.
These people have no income. And their "tone deafness" was really irritating.

Having watched all three series of The Crown, I would watch it again. While I do realise it's television, I preferred the Elizabeth in series one to the Elizabeth in series two.
The acting was well done, I liked Princess Margaret and nearly fell off my seat laughing during the limerick contest between the Princess and President Ford! I so loved the one about the young lady from Dallas!

I am slightly disappointed with the daemons. the main children, Lee Scoresby, and a couple of the villains have visible ones, but most area rarely seen, which makes it harder to notice when someone doesn't have one.

Just started The Gloaming - an Australian take on Scandi Noir. We did spend a bit of the first episode wonderful WTF was going on but there was enough in it to want to try another episode. And the filming in Tasmania is just superb.

Watched the first 2 episodes of Bad Banks last night - a really good look into the dark side of the high finance world. It's an award winning German series but apparently its now available in the US and elsewhere. Well worth a look: m.imdb.com/title/tt6258718/It's also on SBS for the Aussies

Just watched the 1910s episode of Further Back in Time for Dinner. Last week, I was a bit shocked at their reaction to eating rabbit, which we regularly ate as children. This week, they had roast chicken to celebrate their son’s return from World War I, and I was reminded of my parents’ stories of my dad requesting baked rabbit for his return.
