I have been doing surveys for LP in Travelers Pulse for some time. In the last one I've just done I rated them very low. This is what I said: (xposted on 'tweeters') You did not give me the opportunity to say why I have rated you so low. This is because at age 76 I have been the 'Matriarch' of the Thorn Tree Women Travellers since 2001 and I am deeply hurt that you have trashed this chat page. The wonderful friends that I have made on this page are legend. I have visited them around the world. I have supported your books for as long as they've been around and even written for your book "Backpacking around Europe." I have a picture and a 'postcard' in the "Asia" book. I know that some posters get a bit heated from time to time, but all I wish to say to you is "get a life". Lonely Planet has just lost a large number of dedicated supporters, myself included. Hellis, I´ve just rated them very low too. And described them as failure.

Well said, Hellis!
I'm honestly at a point that even if they bring a chat branch back, it's unlikely I will join it unless everyone decides to join en masse.

In all honesty, I dont care. I dont think I will go back either. I was getting pissed off with it and pissed off with myself for using it as a crutch.

I haven't deleted my account, as I have some info in the PM's that I want to save if they give it to us. I also want to be sure that my old (sometimes too persona)l posts will not recur before I delete the original MsU. But I won't go back for anything but such damage control. I like it that we have this board, the glob etc. I guess the influx of newbies will be next to zero, and that is sad, really. 10 years on that board for me. They obviously don't realise how long it takes to build a community. As the language sometimes was foul, I can understand some prudish companies wanted to remove YC and WT - but no off topic at all? My goodness. They obviously don't realise how a community is built at all. Anyhow, thanks for figjamnation

Damage limitation is an excellent idea, msu.

Hellis, an elegant valedictory. Sad to say it will probably fall on deaf ears, or blind eyes.
I've never seen any of those surveys, and at this point will not bother to look for them. The whole debacle is a crying shame.

The no off topic rule is completely ridiculous.

I'm not ever going back there, it just upsets me. I will delete my profile but only when it doesn't feel like I'm doing it in a false sense of thinking I'm getting back at them. Cause I know they don't care.

I didn't think I was sad about it, but I am. I bailed over to the Stew pretty early and thought it would work just fine as a substitute and for the most part it has, although I am glad this place exists now, too.
Anyway, truth is, I'm sad. Just days before it went down I was talking to a friend I made on TT and trying to talk him into coming back. I have all these PMs that were at time funny, at times supportive and were the start of some really wonderful friendships.
I started posting when I quit a toxic job and WT/YC saw me through countless moves, new jobs, tough decisions, meeting my husband, marrying my husband, late nights, stressful times, The March for Women's Lives, multiple trips to NYC, one Toronto pissup that I showed up to at the last minute, weddings, funerals, and gave me one of the best friendships I've had since I was in college.
In 100 years I never thought I'd be part of an online community like that one was.

i got that survey request today as well. wish i was as clever as hellis and actually did it, with all negative responses etc. But i just unsubscribed. I am keeping lp open just in case some or all of it comes back so i can retrieve stuff as well. I did a lot of detailed travel reports in OT. and i really miss some of those people. Would it be alright to invite some that i actually have emails for to come over here? some were occasional posters on wt, but they lived in OT>

I received a wonderful letter from Trip Advisor today, thanking me for my contributions to their forum and stating how without the likes, it would not have grown to the success it has. LP need to take a leaf out of their book.

I'm trying not to make any dramatic statements about what I will or won't do yet, because I feel that it could go either way. i don't think it will, and I think I'll end up bailing from TT, but I may still reference it for travel. It's not the fault of the people that will still be on the site and I don't feel any need to marginalize them. With that being said I don't expect to have anything in commo with them either. I expect a give and take Q&A site with superficial information and no pulse that will still regrettably be widely used. I'm more than willing to be proven wrong though.
The simple fact of the matter is that if all the people I've come to know over the years go back there, or resume there, or what have you, then I would too. I value the companionship of the people I like more than I value my anger and disgruntlement against the owners of the site.
