do you get involved in serious fb discussions?
yesterday a younger friend posted about a scary experience while out jogging at night (she coudln't sleep). i think she handled it very well--choosing to take a cab home rather than go back past a situation that may have been harmless but might have been bad.
several of her friends told her never to go out at night alone. i responded that the vast majority of sexual assaults come from someone the victim has a reason to trust; a friend, friend of a friend, taxi driver, etc.
this morning i have 9 notifications on facebok. 9. i never have 9. 4 is a big number for me. i'm a bit worried that i'm having my head chopped off in there. usually i just go in and 'like' pictures and statuses.

Why be worried? You can choose to ignore them if you like. Fuck 'em if the want to live paranoid.

If you comment on someone else's post, you get notifications whenever someone else comments on the same post after you (up to a certain, unclear, point when it stops), so it may just be that 9 other people left comments about your friend's experience.

i found my ovaries, and looked. the owner of the post liked my comments and the only people i know in the discussion agreed with me. i don't mind people disagreeing with me, i mind when discussion gets lost in abuse.
like a friend posted that crappy 'things women need to know about rapists' which starts by saying rapists look for pony tails or braids. so i thanked him for his good intentions but commented that a) this particular piece had a lot of inaccuracies and outright bad advice, and b) it didn't address the problem that victims are not to blame and c) it didn't give a lot of constructive advice (like what's being given in ron's door thread). it was all about 'women be afraid!!'
his response was, well, fine. i'll take it down and i won't post anything helpful ever again in case you disagree. argh!!! not helpful!

actually, now i think about it, i'm wondering if she freaked out a homeless man--she has short hair and in winter at night it can be hard to tell body type. i used to walk like a man when i had to walk home late at night.

I use fb almost exclusively for stupidness, partly as a way to avoid serious discussion. I apologize to anyone on my FB for the turn the Neanderthal baby surrogate thread is taking. That almost, almost makes me want to sign up for fb.

I use fb almost exclusively for stupidness, partly as a way to avoid serious discussion. Me too! I get enough seriousness IRL. But occasionally, just occasionally, I get sucked into heated discussions. But then I swiftly swing back to normal by saying shallow stuff which is like second nature to me.

Ha ha....you can all easily locate me on FB through Hal's friend list. My profile/cover photos are all kinds of Neanderthal right now! From FB: Muppet is now friends with 207 more strange figments with Neanderthal fetishes. ;-)

I have mixed up so many people on FB with other people that I'm in a permanent state of confusion. I have apparently friended Picky and someone else who I have already forgotten - argh - or perhaps it was someone else.
I've forgotten already.
As for the OP - yes, I sometimes get involved in serious discussions on FB. Mainly with a fruitloop benefit scrounger who makes all sorts of excuses not to work despite graduating from uni last year (HOW? HOW did she MANAGE?) with a PhD in Psychology.

Sprite - actually, she is permanently busy analysing herself and telling the entire internet how she is on anti-depressants and doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks and that there are good sides to the world and oh - aaaaaaaaaaaarggggggggggggghhh.
Complete fruitloop. She wins the award.
