I've been to the Selexyz in Maastricht. My favorite here can't be called a bookstore, since everything is free: www.bookthing.org/.

I've been to the several of Itsa's link; Brussels, Porto (which is lovely - shame I can't read any of the books) Maastricht Paris - several times. The Maastricht one isn't that special IMHO - the venue is amazing but the selection of books is less so. I'd put Hatchards on the list; their staff are WONDERFUL. Last time I was there a child was being led out of the shop crying and shrieking. All the staff member said was "oh, another customer crazy about books" And there should also be Daunt books on that list... oh and then there's the " Hard to Find Bookstore" in Auckland, And if anyone wants to visit Amsterdam, there's a hotel with its own library - filled with signed copies by visiting writers - the Ambassade.

Q, the evening after you posted that I was reading a short story (USAnian) that mentions the Ambassade. Funny how things pop up. He didn't mention the library, though.

I was at a fantastic restaurant yesterday that had shelves and shelves of second hand books for sale. The food was too good to leave the table and browse, but I will go back another time.

I've just visited the one in Porto. Absolutely stunning to look at - the staircase is incredible as is the range of books they carry (including a reasonable selection in English)

Barter Books is great, but I almost get too overwhelmed! The food's pretty good too.

I've just visited the one in Porto. Absolutely stunning to look at - the staircase is incredible as is the range of books they carry (including a reasonable selection in English) I was there some years ago - there were no books in English then, just a really small section in French, and everything else in Portuguese.... Nice to hear it's changed.
