To fill time and to take my mind from more important tasks I spent time today looking at the facebook pages of a couple of the schools where I once taught. Sobering 'twas to note the number of my erstwhile colleagues (most of them somewhat younger than I) who have popped their clogs, but even worse was the number of my ex students who have similarly shed this veil.
An anticipated hour or so of pleasant nostalgia became a somewhat morbid experience.

I have similar thoughts following the school I taught at in Solomon Islands. Too many of my students have died.

I can remember when the first "kid from my class" died, I was still at uni.
Cannot remember his family name now... it was a mountaineering accident though, so tragic but not tragic??

You eat too much late in the day and feel bloated all night long.

The first kid-in-my-class to die was a boy, from a home gun accident, in elementary school. He was a terror and I didn't like him anyhow, but kept that part to myself. The second was a girl who had been in and out of school and hospitals and died from whatever disease/condition it was, no details, but that was very sad.
At college class reunions we used to read the names of all the deceased. There are now so many that we read only the names of those deceased since the previous reunion.

Our first to die was in grade school. Kid had a heart defect. It must have happened during the summer because I don't remember it being discussed. I remember in 1st grade it was a stormy day and he said "there's a tornado out in those weeds". Weeds were some odd smelling grass that grew behind the building.

When something goes wrong with you (like a crook knee) and your Dr doesn't think it's worth the trouble to fix it.

When you decide to count the things you have achieved in a day, rather than what you didnβt get to because you ran out of spoons.

I checked when I got home . The list was on the kitchen table

... you used the PanAm super-cheap around-the-world ticket to make the trip in 80 days
... also within the USA, several regional airlines such as Republic
and you could get an open ticket and fill in the dates as you went along, with no service charge
