FB has reminded me that today is my deceased friend's birthday and suggested that I might want to get in touch with him and help him celebrate. Combination of sad and annoyed.

FB has some shit like that is totally annoying. Once it reminded me that I should be friends with my ex at a time when it was painful. I just think those reminder functions are unnecessary.
But OP reminds me that I should finally close my mother's FB account. It requires a death certificate and I just don't think of it until I read a post like this.

A lady who went under a train near where live this morning in foul weather conditions at a poorly marked level crossing and now there's news of a disastrous high rise fire in London.

that high rise fire is wierd, because apparently they haven't evacuated the building. seemingly, the fire is such that it isn't going into the homes, but people in some parts could be injured if they tried to leave.

I read an article about all the people missing from the Grenfall Tower fire and their last messages to loved ones. Just heartbreaking.

My kitting. Poor Molly is poorly. Months ago she was diagnosed with problems with her pancreas and a change of diet helped temporarily. However, she is rapidly losing weight, is very bony and now throwing up almost immediately she eats anything. She is quite lethargic between vomiting bouts, which wrack her poor little body and really distress both of us. I'm taking her to the vet on Monday but I think she's not going to get better. I just hope she can hold on for another 2 weeks until EGB gets home from Australia for a cuddle.
She's 14 so has had a good innings but I'll be devastated if she's not around any more

The Memsahib called around to see old friends today, we hadn't seen them for a year or so. They weren't there - they're living with their youngest daughter - J's had a bad stroke and A's suffering from dementia - they couldn't even take that long planned trip to stay with their son who is now a UK resident. Shit! They're younger than us and to my mind had a far healthier lifestyle.
You just don't know what's around the corner.

My brother's father has been in a car accident. Fractured leg in several places, fractured pelvis several places, broken ribs, the works... He's being kept in a medical coma until all the surgeries are done. I visited him in the ICU the other day, and had a minor breakdown - the poor nurse who was there was caught completely off guard, until I told him the last time I was in an ICU was when my brother died four years ago. Fortunately, it looks like he'll survive, but I can't imagine how much training it will take for him to get back on his feet.

That's hard, Tigress.
Meanwhile, vale Michael Bond. Paddington Bear travelled in my cabin bag from London to Sydney in 1979. He was a gift for my new niece.

At the end of work today, I called by her office to see how my lovely deputy boss was doing. Her husband has widespread cancer which is now in his brain. We sat while she talked and I mostly listened, for an hour. Her kids are 8 and 10. It's so sad. She's been keeping working for the distraction, but it seems as though he's now losing his sight, due to the tumours. And she's so tired, due to the stress. I think she's going to have to stop soon.
Then on the way home I had to buy a sympathy card for one of the most lovely people I've ever worked with, now retired. Her son died yesterday.

So sorry, Leela. It's hard for anyone to lose a child or nurse a partner through a horrible illness.

She had to go home yesterday. It turned out that her husband had had a seizure while she was at work. He's in hospital now, and they're saying he has a max of three months. Palliative care is being arranged before he goes home. I should know what to do and how to help, but I don't. I and one other colleague are her go to people for emotional support with this, at work. She doesn't live very local to me (maybe 20 miles away), or I'd be round there, even if it was just for a few minutes. I really hope she doesn't blame herself for being at work when this happened. She told me the other day that she was continuing to work because if she stopped, her husband would take that as a sign that things were really bad. Other colleague and I were distraught when we found out. We just keep thinking about their kids. And she's just an extraordinarily nice person.

That's tough. Feeling guilty about working would be a tough one, I also hope she doesn't blame herself. I was coming here to post something but it sort of seems minor after the major upsets your colleague is facing. LC had a non severe allergic reaction yesterday - came up in hives on his face, sort of near his eye and down his cheekbone a bit. He never seems to notice these contact ones so I can't tell when it started. But we are both worried it could be from the lovely puppy he plays with at my mum's place. It is her neighbour's dog and LC and the dog just adore each other. He will be devastated if he is allergic to her. He has been tested for dog and cat before and that was negative, but that doesn't mean it couldn't change as really he hasn't had as much contacts with dogs til this year. And she is an incredibly licky puppy dog, so it could easily be triggered by saliva. I just would have thought it would have been on more than one place if that was the case so I'm still hoping it was a plant he came across in the park we went to that afternoon as well.

So sorry about you colleague, Leela. Hal, I used to get hives from lots of things as a child, most of which I've grown out of. However, once, in my late 30s, I had a horrible rash which migrated all over my body and was incredibly itchy. I had been outdoors in a garden in Byron Bay, and think it must have been a plant there. I've never had anything like it since. So here's hoping LC's rash was also triggered by a plant.
