younger daughter's boyfriend rolled his truck in the early hours of this morning. Fortunately he is okay though in hospital and still having tests. She is on her way to the hospital - some 3 hours away from here. He thinks he may have fallen asleep, can't help wondering if her lunch time visits to him is keeping him up longer than normal.

And Mark Colvin, exceptional journalist, beautiful voice, a wonderful man at the personal level, passed away this morning - the result of a long standing disease contracted when he was covering the genocide in Rawanda.

A friend's mother is in intensive care in another state. I know he and his wife are not in a financial place to fly down there often (and miss work) to take care of things. His father is living, and hopefully in a position to cope. This is a downside of the parentals retiring to Florida. Yes, good times, until it goes bad. Another friend had to get her parents back home from there after her father needed Alzheimers care and mother in poor health too. I am glad the stress of having ill parents is over for me, though I miss them dearly.

It seems that my PhD supervisor has died. She was only 49. It's several years since I saw her but she was an absolute inspiration to me professionally. And last week she was posting photos on Facebook of her new partner and the fun stuff they were doing and now it seems she may have had something happen with her heart (but she was fit and, as I say, not even 50). :-(

going on from daughter's boyfriends accident, I discovered last night he was not wearing a seatbelt, apparently truckies don't. Either they think the high vis gear they wear will save them or it is a 'he man' attitude and not cool for them to wear one. Imo, if he was tied in, he wouldn't have all the soreness and concussion.

Maybe the police need to have a blitz, to prevent further injuries like that? I've seen posters in NSW. this explains why.

Well, isn't that the whole point - to make people do the right thing?

a pop concert in Manchester was bombed last night, by a lone bomber. many of the dead will have been young teens. it happened last night just after we switched off the tv, so the first i heard was the the traffic report for manchester sounding peculiar.
but it is also wonderful to see how quickly people offered drives and homes--even hotels offering free beds and one has set up a safe place for teens who were separated from parents.

on my cycle to work, there's a particularly busy junction that all the bus and tram traffic goes through. this morning it was blocked off because of an accident with a cyclist that happened about 20 minutes before i came through. i've since learned that the bike wheel got caught in the tram track, and the cyclist was thrown in front of a minibus--she died this afternoon.
i go through that junction every day very carefully, as a cyclist has to cross the tram line and then ride parallel to it, or the reverse--there isn't always room to safely cross it at 90 degrees. cycle groups have been campaigning for years for adjustments to that area to make it safer, but the city insists it's all safe.

Three funerals in close succession in a small community have left the teenagers reeling. Today's was the grandmother and long-term carer of one of our families.

sad news of the death of a college classmate. I'll try to get to her memorial service next week. I got lost, drove around in circles, asked several people for directions, and finally got there about 15 minutes late. Her husband was delivering the eulogy. It was wonderful, showing her inimitable mixture of love, friendship and incredible crazy pranksterism - the classiest class clown that ever lived. A couple of other people also spoke very movingly. I saw some other classmates at the church, which was standing room only. There was a reception back at their house, but I didn't know the way, was in no mood to get lost again, and had seen that most of the congregation were people I didn't know. So I came home. The up-side of being late was missing all the Jesus-talk at the beginning and sitting through only the stuff at the end, which was more universal in tone anyhow. I will miss her.

Aww Batman. He just didn't want anyone to get hurt.
I remember playing "Batman" with my friend Diane when we were kids (and my mom hassling us about it because she wanted us to make up our own characters instead of imitating things we saw on TV).
