Asking for a friend. If you wanted to make a stop over for a night or two btw Vegas and San Francisco and had a car, where would you go? National Park stop at Sequoia National Forest? Wine tasting at Santa Maria? A friend's husband is going to the US for a conference and she is tagging along. Has figured rather than spend extra time at the very expensive conference site they will road trip a bit and wants some ideas. I said I'd ask my friends.

The sequoias are supposed to be amazing! I have still never seen one.
Or, drive all the way to the coast like to Big Sur or something - then drive north up the coast from there.

I love the road south (hwy 101) of San Francisco through Big Sur but the time of year may affect availability of any place to stay.. and it won’t be cheap. Going south may also mean she will have drive through Los Angeles to get to Las Vegas; that may put some travellers off. I also love Death Valley (south east of San Francisco)but I suspect it may not be an attraction for someone from Australia! Time of year there is also a factor.

I'd recommend going north on the coast up to the Redwoods. Big trees, coastline, less tourists than south of SF. Redwood National and State Parks are beautiful and then I'd recommend looping back past Mount Shasta and the National Forest there. Big trees + big mountain + coast = happy
But if their route must be SF to Vegas then take the route that goes by Yosemite. The quicker southern route is not the scenic route.
If I've got two nights to stay between those two cities I'd fly and use those two nights to stay somewhere more scenic.

Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking that perhaps an Australian might not be interested in the dry landscape of central/eastern Cali! Fly to San Fran and then go north, to Point Reyes and environs.

What do they not have the opportunity to do in Australia?
