What good podcasts have you been listening to lately?
I saw a recommendation (in the Financial Times, of all places!) for 544 Days, the podcast by Iranian-American journalist Jason Rezaian about his time in detention in Iran, and it was really well done.
Apart from that I listen mostly to literature podcasts, but I'd like to broaden my horizons a bit.
For Spanish speakers, the pan-Latin American/US-produced Radio Ambulante is great - they speak normal speed but you can access Spanish and English transcripts if you need to.
I personally don't like true crime, but I know it's a very popular genre.

I mainly listen to history podcasts. But my standard recommendation for podcasts is My Dad Wrote a Porno

The only one I listen to regularly is a cycling one, so that's a bit niche. I like the Louis Theroux podcasts, if you haven't listened to them.

The live webcast show that we watch near-religiously is recorded as a podcast: inlieuof.fun/ It's sort of an interview show like you'd have on TV, only there's also a live audience who come on to ask the guest questions (I've only done this twice, I can never think of a question). The hosts are amusing people - a lawyer who specializes in internet law, an analyst who specializes in foreign affairs law kind of stuff, a philosophy professor, and a law student. (The first two were the hosts at first, and then they brought on the other two later on.) They've had on a wide variety of guests and also are just funny people. I don't always agree with them (they're a little less leftist than me), but I've learned a huge amount from watching it since the beginning of the pandemic.

oooh good idea for a thread!
a lot of what I listen to is in Dutch, and most English language podcasts are relatively niche about sustainability in fashion.
That said, the (Australian) Wardrobe Crisis podcast is very very good and talks about way more than just fashion, including degrowth, climate change, colonialism etc. Really recommended.
One that has a bit of a more general scope is the From What If to What Next podcast which envisions what our future could look like in a whole range of areas like travel, the economy, and much more.
I've also heard good things about The Anthropocene, Reviewed but haven't really listened to that yet.
Oh, and Your Undivided Attention from the Center for Humane Technology also has some great episodes.
(In Dutch, I also listen to lighter and more entertainment style podcast but in English I guess it's all quite serious!)

Just started this one and like it: Unsung ScienceAnd Throughline, which is sort of a history podcast. Mostly a retelling of history. ThroughlineFinally I like You're Wrong About, another kind of history show where they go over a prior news story that was mostly reported incorrectly/ You're Wrong About

Thanks for all these, I'll go through them later! I love the fact that we come from different countries and have recommendations from them. I mean I like a lot of bbc programs but they're not the be all and end all ;-)

There's a new Jon Ronson podcast available (it was on the BBC before but now it's on Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts) called Things Fell Apart. I just find his style incredibly engaging, I would listen to whatever he did really. This series is about episodes in the "culture wars" (which he defines as "things people yell at each other about on the Internet"). One episode is about how evangelicals got into anti-abortionism, another is about the AIDS crisis of the early 80s, and so on. It's quite American focused but Ronson does live there, so not surprising. Compulsive listening!

Do you like his other stuff? I personally find him incredibly thoughtful and respectful to everyone he talks to, which is probably why they open up to him, but probably my view isn't universal. I think the first episode isn't the strongest, and episode 3 is really good.

I can't link him to anything I've heard, but given that my ears live on BBC Radio 4, I probably have.
I haven't listened to much of Theroux, but he is a regular 'guest' on the Dead Ringers radio comedy.

I like Ronson too, and follow him on Twitter.
Just not sure I could listen to his current podcast, as good as it sounds because I feel like everyday the wackos in this country are taking over and winning the culture wars.

Hm, yes that is tricky. Some of the episodes are quite uplifting and give you hope about people's ability to change and connect with each other, but some are definitely not.

Oh, a podcast recommendation for this thread though I think Liiisa will appreciate it most. I mentioned the Your Undivided Attention podcast above, and recently they did an interview with author Kim Stanley Robinson about how science fiction can provide answers for our future (in this case: climate change). Really liked this episode. lillielangtry do you have a recommendation for a literature podcast?

Really liked this episode. lillielangtry do you have a recommendation for a literature podcast? The BBC's A Good Read is really nice. It involves the host and 2 guests each time choosing a book and they all read and discuss all 3 books. It's only half an hour per episode so that's about 10 minutes per book. There's also the BBC World Service's World Book Club, where they get on the author of a book (not necessarily a new one) and listeners get to send in their questions. I also really like Backlisted, this is more in-depth and some of the books discussed are quite obscure - I haven't read many of them. But I still like the way they discuss them! They generally have 15-20 minutes of general book talk before getting down to the actual book in question.

Two recommendations: 1. Everything is Alive A weird little podcast where each episode the host interviews an inanimate object. Sounds weird, but I really like the actors they have to voice each of the objects. I thought the episode that interviewed the pregnancy test was great and the other one I've liked so far is the interview with a bath towel. They're short episodes, under 20 minutes for each. Link to Everything is Alive2. Newts! I haven't started this yet (waiting for a plane trip later this week) but when I heard a trailer I thought it sounded cool. It also made me think that Liiisa and the rest of you sci fi aficionados would enjoy it. It's a radio play inspired by the work of Czech science fiction pioneer Karel Čapek. Link to Newts!

Over the weekend I listened to a BBC podcast called Believe in Magic, about a young woman called Megan who founded a charity for sick children (a "make a wish" kind of thing) and was supported by One Direction. But then it turned out that her own supposed brain tumour may have been a lie...
This is grippingly executed and ultimately a sad story. I have a bit of an interest in cancer fakers as they pop up every now and then and, while there is obviously a mercenary aspect to some of them, there's more to it than that.

How did I miss the fact there's a new season of the Louis Theroux podcast?
Almost annoyed that my commute is no longer long enough to listen to a whole episode.
