I started planning our trip for this summer - it is a's turn to chose, and as usual she chose Sweden. decided to have a stop in denmark on the way, and else, visiting some relatives, the obligatory visit to astrid lindgren world, plus gotland, stockholm, uppsala ... so, there are a few longer/more expensive train trips and also several shorter, cheaper ones ... longest one will be the trip home, where i am thinking of going all the way from lund to berlin in one go (partly sleeping in a night train) ...
last time we went, after i had already booked part of the tickets, i suddenly realized it'd have been cheaper to get an interrail ticket (since we had some very long train rides as we went up to the very north). but by then it was too late for that, as i had booked half the train rides already.
now, this time, i wanted to check beforehand, but i am calculating, checking prices, and feeling confused, as the prices vary so much and the itinerary is not completely clear yet and you can't even book most trains that long ahead. i want to book the night train home soon though, as that'll be on a friday night, so beds might book out quite early ...
so just a general question - have you gotten interrail tickets (the ones for several countries or just one country) and did you find them financially worthwhile - especially if you didn't just go long journeys from capital to capital, but explored one country, traveling shorter distances? also, do you know if you can cancel them if need be? (since i have no idea how the health of a's dad develops until the summer, part of me wonders if i should hold off planning for now, but then, since some of the places we visit are quite popular in the summer, they might be booked out, so i kind of think i better plan and book now, and if for whatever reason we want to be close by instead, i'll just see what i can cancel ...
