Update on accents.
If I speak Dutch in the Netherlands, a Dutch person knows I'm a non-Dutch speaker almost immediately. Most will hear an English accent.
If I speak Dutch in Belgium, the Belgians hear the Dutch accent and think I'm Dutch - for quite a while.
I think once they hear the Dutch accent they stop listening for anything else though, I'm sure the English accent is still there. Might test it on a multi lingual Belgian colleague who can switch his English from British to American to Sth African...

We should also ask riverhorse, now that she is back in Germany, if Germans can pick she lives near Cologne?
