Can anyone tell me about them? They're a big of a mystery to me - what is it like to travel there?

I only have last year's cruise to go by, but I absolutely loved it there. I spent a day each on Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife (not nearly enough, I know, but it was great to get a taste and see what I really want to come back for and explore in depth). Each island was so different - Lanzarote is like a lunar landscape, not a single tree on the island, all black sand and volcanoes. Gran Canaria was more lush, and I did a great hike around the edge of an old caldera. Tenerife is also incredible, the inland national park (El Teide) has the highest mountain in Spain which is snow-capped in winter, and some bizarre landscapes that look like Monument Valley. Some great walks to be had there as well. Some of the towns go back to earliest colonial times (early 1600s?) with lovely architecture to match.

They're a top package holiday destination because there's hardly anywhere else which is so accessible from Europe and has good weather practically guaranteed all year round. I used to go self-catering with my parents every year when I was a kid. Some of the resorts - e.g. Playa de las Americas, Tenerife - are huge and focused on nightlife (happy hour cocktails, etc!). However, a friend of mine went on a sports holiday to La Gomera this year and loved it.

Lanzarote is beautiful and surprisingly unspoilt by the tourism industry. Volcanoes, weird landscapes, warm sea, lovely food, very low-key and relaxing. You can hire a car (really cheap) and explore the whole island in about a week.
I didn't like Tenerife that much (although the Teide and the national park around is nice), but it's still OK.
The rest is mega hotels, discos, fake Irish pubs, mostly geared towards the British drinking classes. And maybe families with small children.

I like them. Hills to walk and narrow roads to cycle. Endemic species if you're a bird watcher. Last time (Dec 2012) I stayed in Puerto de Santiago, and you didn't have to walk many blocks from the beach to find ordinary Spanish bars, with old geezer's watching footie instead of beach tourists.
