Solo? October?
How might that be? Anyone experienced it? One of the US travel/cooking celebs had a show about Tangier. I'm attracted now.

One of my favourite places and travelled solo a couple of times although I took a small group tour for the first visit. Can be challenging although depends on where you've been and how you go with bargaining\ hassle and a bit of "hello darling" type situations. Tangier is okay but there are cities that are of far more interest and varied. October is a good time. Autumn colours and depending on your tolerance the heat level is usually comfortable as opposed to super hot or darn cold. One of the biggest misconceptions is that it is a hot place. I've never been so cold in my life as I was one December. I'm too old and grouchy to do the cheap cheap and cheerful accommodation and transport methods and have found that for a relatively small amount (comparatively) there are good options available.

I visited once. Marrakech, from there an over night trip into the mountains (well, not quite by choice. long story) and a 2 night trip to the coast (Essouira). Fantastic trip. Loved it.
wasn't solo though, which would've caused some more hassle but it's probably doable. but also challenging like whothingie said.

Don't know Tangier, but I went solo to Marrakech in April last year and absolutely loved it. I didn't have any trouble at all with being hassled by anyone as a solo woman, fortunately. I think it helped a lot being able to speak French, which opened up a whole different level of interaction with the locals. Marrakech is spectacular, absolutely fascinating, noisy, crazy, busy, beautiful.

Very much do-able, certainly if you speak a little bit French. Tanger is not the most interesting place I think. Essouira, Fes, Meknes, Marrakech all very lovely.

we went to fes. in retrospect, we would have flown into fes and out of marrakech, or something like that. we hired a driver who took us into the mountains, date plantation, his family's kasbah hotel, the desert--we could just see algeria. did the kitschy overnight in the desert thing--touristy but fun. combined it wasn't cheap but we accidentally stayed in an expensive (but gorgeous) place in fes, and everything booked through there tended to be higher end and we couldn't be bothered to go out and do it ourselves for less.
even with my very large partner next to me, i still got a lot of stares, so i imagine that without him i'd have been getting verbal attention as well. we didget a fair amount of 'buy my stuff' though not as bad as expected. but hey, i survived istanbul, surely it couldn't be much worse!
french helped a lot.

When I was there last I hired a car with my (girl)friend. Easy to get around and we did get stares but that was it. It was relatively cheap way of traveling as well. I found Egypt way worse, where they actually try to touch you and start chatting you up. Dress appropriately and they might stare at a women traveling alone but they'll be respectful and kind in most cases.
I hope to go back this year, but this time to take Peanut to meet my husbands family up north.
