Any Arabists here? I'm curious about the North African family name prefix Bel that you see in Francophone North Africa. What is it in Arabic? I can't work it out.

What are some of the complete names? That might get people thinking.
And welcome to the Language Lab. I was hoping you'd turn up.

The head of the group that carried out the hostage taking in southern Algeria is Mukhtar bel Mukhtar. I've also seen Belhassane and Belhadi. It looks like it would be the preposition bi (with/at/etc) plus the definite article, but I can't make sense of that here.
