I'm having the girls over on Sunday for a surprise Afternoon Tea. We all met through our ante natal group and have become great friends, three of us in particular being very close. We've been so supportive with each other and had such a great time that I thought I'd celebrate with them, as it's a year since we all met. I've made up some cards to present to each of them with pictures of our babies, then and now, in the order they arrived with a little fun poem about being a parent and a thank you message from Master Surfy and I for great friendship and support and here's to many years, etc etc. Anyway, I need some inspiring ideas for things to make for this tea. So far I've come up with - Goats cheese, roasted red pepper and walnut sandwiches Cucumber and cheese sandwiches Mini quiche pieces (not sure what yet- ideas?) Scones, cream and jam Tea bread Short bread Anything else you can think of? ? Also, I don't eat white bread and I don't think any of them do, so is it OK do you think to do everything on brown?

i adore cucumber sandwiches on toasted brown bread. i don't even put cheese on them, just a smear of good mayo--which i'm given to understand is very un-british.
i can't remember any of the wonderful food from the book club i was in last year. a lot of it was really healthy (in small doses) because most of the women were either losing or maintaining weight.

Mmmmm, delicious. It sounds like you will have lots of choice so I wouldn't worry about no white bread.
I like courgette or spinach in a quiche.

Ooo osome good ideas here, especially like the idea of courgette quiche and avocado wraps! Sprite, cucumber sandwiches are lush, but not as nice as beetroot

Where's Megs when you need her? Afternoon tea does not have quiche, salads or wraps. Afternoon tea is all about the sandwiches, cakes and teas. At a push you can include champagne. When I made afternoon tea for friends recently I made:
Sandwiches (all on brown bread, no crusts) Salmon and cream cheese Egg mayo and cress Ham and mustard Cucumber
Cakes Mini lemon loafs Batternberg Choc eclairs Raspberry financiers Scones (with and without raisins) served with clotted cream and jam Salted chocolate caramel tarts
Champers and tea

Champagne is usually know as High Tea, is it not? Cake, I'm not expecting the Queen, we don't have to be traditional

"English High Tea usually involved a mug of tea, bread, vegetables, cheese and occasionally meat. Variations on high tea could include the addition of pies, potatoes and crackers."
