Just booked to fly down to Melbourne from Sydney over the Easter long weekend with a friend of mine. We'll arrive after lunch on the Friday and leave on Monday morning. I have been to Melbourne a couple of times before so done the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island and some of the touristy city stuff but do any of you Melbournians have any tips for things to see, places to shop and nice restaurants and bars? We won't have a car so must be able to get there by public transport or a short taxi ride. Thanks!

Ria is probably the best person to recommend bars, there really are a zillion in town alone (at last count). I tend to like chilled pubs with a good range of beers, so places like the Local Taphouse in St Kilda and The Alehouse Project in Brunswick are favourites of mine. It really depends on what kind of place you're after - trendy, pubby, sporty, arty, cocktails or beer? Outdoor/beer garden/rooftop or cosy inside? There are some quirky shops in the Campbell Arcade at Flinders Street station, plenty hidden in the laneways. Also Flinders Lane has some good shopping, as does the Fitzroy area and Bridge Road in Richmond. Generally some of the areas you could explore are Richmond (Swan Street and Bridge Road for shopping and drinking, Victoria Street for Vietnamese food), Lonsdale Street has great Greek food, Little Bourke Street is Chinatown, Lygon Street in Carlton is a little overrated now but still does good food and is the Italian precinct. St Kilda has the beach and good eating and drinking options, though it can be a bit backpackery along some streets. Fitzroy is a bit more alternative and has a bit of a Latino flavour, though it is very diverse. Brunswick has some very good drinking options. There are heaps of art galleries and shows you can see - stop by Half-tix at the Town Hall, and look at www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/Pages/Home.aspx . Let me know if you want artsy recommendations and I can put something together for you.

You might want to book accommodation asap, as well as kids holiday the comedy festival and other stuff is on. Why not book in to see a comedian you like?
Do you prefer bar or pub? I could give my top 5 by inner suburb :-)
If you like trendy dressed up stuff then Chapel Street is your place - personally I hate it and never go.
What kind of food - do you have a price range?
"We" does this include kids?
Where are you staying - it makes a difference for transport.

We're staying at Fraser Place on Exploration Lane. It's all booked up and we got a good deal. It's just me and a friend so no kids. At the moment I am sort of regretting booking up with this particular friend as I'm starting to realise we do not have much in common. I am pretty laid back and like more casual pubs, sightseeing, etc. she is more into fashion and her looks. She spends a lot of time looking at herself in the mirror!
Ideas for casual pubs would be great. Thanks Ria!
