I haven't booked anything yet, but it looks like I'll be in Australia from March 2nd to 18th. About a week or so will be spent with my sister in Orange, and I'm thinking I can easily spend 4 days in Sydney exploring. That means there are 4-5 days left - any suggestions? I like peoplewatching, photography, museums, cafes, nature walks - I'm feeling like an ad on Match.com here. I won't have a car, so public transport is necessary. Has anyone taken the train between Sydney and Melbourne? Is it scenic? Thanks - I'll have a million other questions later, I'm sure!

YES! Come to Melbourne! Peoplewatching, photography, museums, cafes - check! Can do via public transport or walking (especially if in the CBD).
Nature walks I'm sure you could do via public transport, but I'll let someone that knows what they're talking about advise on that. Probably depends on what constitutes a nature walk for you, I guess!
Don't bother with the train (I've heard, I've never taken it), apparently it's dead boring - LOTS of dry empty space. Better off flying. Quicker (duh!) and possibly cheaper.

Train - I've done it, I wouldn't do it again (these days I'm too old and married to get drunk and pick up a stranger to make the boring hours more one. The party in the final carriage of overnight trains were always fun as a uni student)
The Blue Mtns are between Orange and Sydney - I don't know if your sister would take you there, but you could easily spend a weekend there for bushwalking, photography.
Sydney - I can give you loads of good tips for people watching and museums! And if you are there on a Monday, Tue and Wed, I can meet up for lunch, child free. Could even do a sightseeing day at Cockatoo Island ( you can get to it via ferry). Photography and historical site all in one (plus maybe the island bar will still be open).

gertie - I'm guessing you're in Melbourne? I haven't done a lot of reading up on it yet, but it seems like a cool city. What's the CBD? HD - What - I won't get to meet LC?!? I might just skip Sydney altogether, then. I'd love to meet up, and Cockatoo island sounds great. I bought a guidebook yesterday, so will read up a bit and pick your brain more later. Thanks for the heads-up on the train - it sounds like it would've been fun 20 years ago - plane it is! And I'm pretty sure Blue Mountains will be on the agenda with sis. Back to googling and reading.

Central Business District. The city centre, basically.

no don't train it - possibly would cost more than a Jetstar flight. If you do decide to fly Syd - Melb make sure you go to Tullarmarine Airport rather than Avalon. Can't believe I actually said that bu tTulla it is more convenient to the CBD - Avalon is better for Geelong and the GOR etc.
Blue Mountains a great place to wander around.

Central Business District. The city centre, basically. Aha - that explains why I've seen it when reading about Sydney as well. Poppy - Tullarmarine is noted, thanks! Ticket is now booked and visa is granted - I'm officially coming! ;D

What are your top 3 must-sees in Melbourne?

Tigress, what are you dates for Sydney? During the time you are in Oz I'll be going to a kids concert at the Opera House with LC and my parents (Simon Tedeschi, wonderful Aussie pianist playing Mozart). You won't be the first TTer I've taken along to the concerts with me if it is on a day you are around (and tix are still available) and you want to see a performance at the Opera House rather cheaply.

HD - I'm arriving Sat 18th, and will probably stay until Wednesday - would love a concert in the Opera House if it's possible. Poppy - ;D You just got exalted for that.

Tigress - damn, that is after the concert. Oh well, we can still work something out to do a photo sightseeing day! And there is no Saturday 18th. It's either 16th, or Monday the 18th. ;-)

bugger bugger bugger - just realised if you are arriving in Sydney on the 18th, you are more than likely planning on being in Melbourne the weekend of the 23rd. If I dessert the masses that weekend I would be shot - the 24th is the Duck Race - busy busy busy. the 23rd we are having a sausage sizzle at shopping centre, purpose being advertising the duck race. fingers crossed your dates don't clash with my busy weekend.

Man, I must've been sleeping when I wrote that post, HD - I actually arrive in Sydney on a Saturday, but the 2nd of March lol. I *leave* Australia on the 18th. So let's try this again - I plan to stay in Sydney from Sat March 2nd, probably to Wednesday morning, going to Melbourne Wed 6th until Sat morning, when I'll be going back to Sydney and catching a train to Orange. This is all tentative - haven't made any reservations yet. I hope that makes more sense lol.

I'm around the weekend of the 2nd/3rd in Sydney if you wanted cocktails / coffee meet up. I can't do the sunday morning though but free after lunch.

Still misses the concert dates. Oh well. But more than happy to do a Cockatoo Island trip on a Mon or Tue - sadly the Island Bar only opens from Weds at that time of the year. Maybe I'm destined never to go, it was pissing down with rain when I met up with Paddox, and then the last friend I'd planned way in advance was pregnant and not drinking by the time we got there! Not sure on the weekend yet, am possibly busy Sunday arvo/ evening, but Sat arvo should be ok if you aren't too jet lagged!

crazycat - A Sunday meet-up sounds good - I'm hoping you know a good coffee/cocktail spot? HD - I don't think I'm going to make any kind of sense to anyone on Saturday, after 24 hrs travel and a 16hrs time difference. I think Monday or Tuesday will be a better choice. ;D

I've just realised that weekend is Mardi Gras anyway, so a) book accommodation in Sydney now, and b) it would be crazy busy that night, so staying in is the best!

Mardi Gras! No wonder so many places were sold out for Sat night. Maybe I'll just run around and flash my titties instead of staying in that night. ;D

I wish there was a like button for your last post Tigress.
If the weather is nice then there is a lovely bar at the Opera House with great views over to the bridge. Maybe HC can also give some recommedations.
