I have won a grant to go to a conference near New York (Yay!) I have accommodation during the conference but I want to stay in the city for a week afterwards. Does anyone know a good hostel? I'm not particularly sociable, I just want somewhere cheapish (relatively speaking), safe and where I can keep to myself if I want to.

I looked at hostels, but they weren't particularly cheap compared to what I'm used to. Much more expensive than London, for instance. And the reviews weren't good either.
Fortunately I ended up staying with a TTer for most of my stay, but spent my first couple of nights at Hotel 31, which had a good location in Manhattan and was (for NYC) really good value.

I have no idea what it is like now but when I was a student I stayed at Chelsea International a few times. I was always with friends so we shared a private room but they have small dorms too.

Thanks guys. Hotel 31 looks a bit too expensive for me (it's coming up as £720 for a week, whereas a hostel seems to be about £250. Chelsea International looks quite hopeful though, and they have single rooms for £40 per night, which is very tempting...

...and apologies. The place I stayed in was Hotel 17. 31 is the sister hotel. I'm not sure if there'd be be any price difference. £250 a week is excellent though.

I'm tempted by this place now: www.theboweryhouse.com/ If I book an "original cabin" it would be £400 for the week and semi-private - I'd have a kind of booth thing to myself. That might be a good balance between being able to socialize and able to hide.

Congratulations!!
And the booth seems like a good compromise.

There is also the coffee and breakfast b&b in the lower east side. That is a great location too.

Woo! Yay. I don't really stay in hostels, so I might not be being helpful, but in case you can tolerate $120-130/night, I love East Village Bed & Coffee in the East Village: www.bedandcoffee.com/index.php

Right, the Larchmont - I stay there a lot, since EVB&C has a 2-night limit and lots of times when I stay in NYC it's en route to/from somewhere else. It's in a great location. I forgot that it's also pretty cheap - I think it bottoms out around $90.

Thanks everyone - I've booked East Village Bed and Coffee! I'm really excited now and my room (the Dutch room) looks great on the picture. I've spent more money than I can really afford, but I have to share a room at the conference the previous week and I don't think I can manage two weeks straight - I like to have somewhere to hide! Thanks for the tips.

The trip adviser reviews have panicked me now though - how friendly is it? Can I just be left alone if I want to?

You can be totally left alone! The owner and her assistant (and the dog) are just friendly when you want to talk to them. And sometimes there are a couple of people hanging out in the common spaces, but you can just ignore them or say hi & disappear into your room.

It's a great neighborhood. I'm going to recommend Puddin' puddinnyc.com/storemenu/ and the Morroccan restaurant across the street from there.

Mmm Webs... I'll have to remember that.
I'll bet the Moroccan restaurant she's talking about is Café Mogador, which has brilliant breakfasts - poached eggs and halloumi cheese and amazing coffee. OH YES. Actually I think I found out about it from the restaurant list that they give you when you stay at EVB&C.
