The bloke and I haven't had a proper holiday together since our honeymoon and we both have leave to use up by the end of March. We are thinking of going to Sicily. I know it won't be really hot at that time but we're not sun-worshippers - just want it to be a bit better than northern Germany! I'd like to go somewhere beautiful and peaceful; mountains are good, it would be fantastic if we didn't have to hire a car but I guess we could do. I've just bought a guidebook and will get researching, so please don't shout at me but does anyone have any suggestions?

One word, Lily: Taormina. It´s simply stunning. We did hire a car in Sicily, and made a good use of it for day trips: went to Mt Etna, Siracusa, Noto, Ragusa, Modica, and couple of other places. We stayed in a lovely, old-fashioned B&B in Taormina, which was a bit uphill, but we had amazing views of the Etna. The landlady served breakfast on china, with silver cutlery and linen napkins, and the bedding was incredibly fresh and crispy. Just the way you´d expect it in a traditional Sicilian household. I think it was called Villa Sara. In Siracusa, we originally stayed in a lovely agriturismo (Ai Papiri), but there were too many mosquitos from the nearby river, so we moved to another gorgeous B&B right on the sea - Villa Giugiulena. Oh, and the food! The gelatos, soft almond cookies, and granite! We loved every second in Sicily, and are planning on going back this summer. If you have any questions, I´ll be more than happy to help. Are you on photoblog, by any chance? I´ve got some photos from that trip there.

Oh, thanks rez, that sounds very interesting. I'll look up some of those places. Not on pblog - it is tempting, but really I have enough going on online as it is...
