We are constantly reminded that academic tourism is frowned upon. Is it bad that when I'm looking for conferences to submit to one of the first things I check is the location.
A few years ago I had to choose between Manchester and Hawaii, can you guess which one won?

oh, fun. As an undergrad there was a compulsory field trip for one subject in third year. The choices were Hawaii and Scone ( a small country town in NSW). I'd have felt ripped off if students weren't allowed to travel.  |

I just had to submit my research/teaching plan for the year yesterday... rather than attend a whole load of small conferences, I've chosen to use all my funds to go to one in Kampala. **GRINS** |

Yeah, I thought that was the point of conferences. I went to a rather good one in Estonia once and practically every international person there said "Well, I'd never been to Estonia...". That is one thing I miss about academia, I must say.
