I'm in the process of booking a return train ticket London to Brighton, and I find you can't print them out at home. You can print out airline tickets, international train tickets but not with Southern trains. You collect them from stations with self-service Ticket Vending Machines. How easy is it to do this? I thought of getting son to pick them up but you have to show the credit card used for purchase so that's out.
Anyone here had to collect their tickets this way and how did it go?

I do it all the time. It's really easy. Make sure you don't lose/misplace your booking ref and you'll be fine.

IF anything goes wrong, you can take your card to a counter and they will help you - this happened to me recently when the vending machine had run out of ink and wouldn't print my ticket. However, it's not common, generally it's very simple.

Ps. You can pick them up at any station and not just the station you've selected. It's not obvious that you can do that but you can.

Huh, that's awful cake. I did have my booking ref with me but he didn't care, he just wanted my card. Anyway, I guess it is safest to have both.

Very easy and like Cake said, it can be done in lots of different places and in advance. Just don't then lose your tickets!
I've had to buy 5 minutes of internet time in the past to retrieve a booking ref from my email before so that I could get my tickets! Still made the train.
