For work I am traveling to Newcastle soon.
Now, I have the freedom to chose what I want to do, but don't know where to start.
I'd like to visit an area that has quirky shops, cafés and restaurants (and steer clear a little from the H&M, Zara shopping streets), modern architecture, historie etc is also what I like.
Any advice?

Oh, if only that was true HD! Must find a travel gig to sponsor that!! But yeah, it's Newcastle-upon-Tyne and I would love to do something different than what most Dutch people do there: shopping in big malls. So, kinda looking for quirky craft shops, vintage places, boutique beers, wine bars etc. Hm, wasn't elliedee from Newcastle??

I lived in Newcastle for a year, although it seems quite a long time ago now I start thinking about places to go. Jesmond? It's certainly got lots of places to eat and Jesmond Dene park is rather nice. Wallsend for the Roman history (Segedunum)? In the city centre, I like the Grainger market. Also, if you end up on the Quayside, can I recommend the little, free photography gallery, the Side Gallery? They sometimes have really good stuff on there. www.amber-online.com/sections/side-gallery These are not one area which fits all your requirements, I'm afraid, they are just some things I quite liked!

If you've never seen it before, nearby there are really good sections of Hadrian's Wall as well, and some nice walks along parts of it.

Plus, you could always try this place. I particularly like the sound of it being located in a 13th century priory

Hello! Yes I'm just south of Newcastle and Sticks lives near the city centre. The visit NewcastleGateshead website is a good place to start, but by the sounds of it you want to go to the Ouseburn and High Bridge areas, as well as the places lillielangtry mentions. The good news is that it's a compact city and easily walkable, the bad news is that it's pretty hilly so you need comfy shoes! Unfortunately you've missed the Late Shows this year (they're mid May and are usually fab) but depending on when you are here there's the Eat NG festival and the Americana festival, as well as regular things like the Boiler Shop Steamer events. AmericanaEatNGBoiler Shop SteamerIf you let me know the dates you're here I can have a look at what's on, and maybe we could have a mini jam-up with Sticky? There's a great bar that specialises in gin on High Bridge...

Just to add - my twitter will be unlocked as soon as I've worked out a slight change of handle... My goddaughter (who is 10) managed to find me on Instagram where I was using the same username as twitter. I don't post terribly inappropriate things on twitter but I post things that I wouldn't necessarily want to share with a 10 year old, if you know what I mean. Sorry to thread jack!

Oooh, I happen to pop my head in here and hear that the Tulip is coming! Yay! Let me know dates and we can hopefully catch you. Unfortunately I can probably only really do daytime and will have the twig but I live in Jesmond near the dene (fabulous big park, not quite Vondelpaark but still nice) and loads of cute quirky shops and cafés.

And we could go to the National Children's Book Centre and see the exhibitions, and then walk along the river?

Darlings, I'll be working... not much free time I'm afraid. Don't even know where they're gonna put me, hotelwise ;-)
I wasn't fishing for a pissup (what?? Who am I???), but just wanted to have some info of where to go off the beaten track. Thanx for all the great advice!!

Is Tynemouth easy to reach from Newcastle by metro/bus?

Yes, there is a metro stop. I think it must take about 40 minutes(?).

Okay, good to know. Not sure if the weather is permitting (it's England afterall), but we'll see.
Now... let's finish this list with craft pubs to visit (hey, someone has to test them!) hints and tips are welcome :-)
