nah, i think it can be a lot of fun, as long as you aren't planning to do too much or change hotels every night ...

Complete with birth certificate and all that crap? (I cannot understand why, if you need to produce birth certificate to get passport the passport doesn't count. And, if it is to rule out forgeries, well birth certificates can be forged as well!)
Like riki said, I can't imagine you are planning a trip where you change hotels/apartments every day and will be doing 10 hr tours every second day, so I'm sure it will be fine.

Yeah, I don´t get the birth certificate crap...
And we would do a long-term rental of an apartment or house or something. Preferably a nice location with a pool or something where we can bum around all day...

If you're just going to be in one place, then I don't see why not. The flights to and from South Africa will be long, but otherwise it's really not that different from a three-week trip to the next town over.

sounds great to me. Travelled with littleM to Europe when she was 9/10 mths. Stayed in different places every few nights, including a trip to Portugal. Was fine. The flight was the worst part but I think the 3 yr old would be more difficult than the 1 yr old. At least they sleep more. (theoretically)

Sounds like fun. As long as they get to see animals.

They will definitely see animals if we do decide to go there

Having one place as a base sounds like the perfect idea. And despite the long flights, South Africa doesn't have a time difference from you guys at all (or only an hour or two, depending on the time of year) so jetlag won't really be an issue. Already looking forward to the pics and travel tales!

My sister has been to peru with a one year old and a 4.5 year old, and they loved it - traveled slower, staid in one place for a few days, but had a great time. Go for it!

South Africa and Norway are on the same time now, until Norway goes back to winter time We´d definitely do it very slowly and lazily. It will require a lot of extra research for housing options, but I´m actually looking forward to that part...

I didn't see the "additional" in your post and thought you counted yourself as one of the kids;-)

Some kids travel well, some don't. Some adults do and some don't.
You won't know unless you try (if you listen carefully, you will hear a faint chant of "do it. do it. do it" repeating).

It's probably perfectly doable, but why not wait til the kids are old enough to properly appreciate the trip and retain memories of it? I know I would've been royally pissed off if I'd been on an amazing trip like that when I was too young to remember it in later years.
Of course if circumstances mean it's now or never, then definitely now.

Let us know how it goes, I think you already made the decision Really picky? I can see it being a bit annoying, but I don't begrudge the things my parents did before i was old enough to enjoy/remember them.

I never understood that argument - there will be other holidays when they are old enough to remember...and even if they don't remember it they will still have fun! Otherwise you wouldn't have to do anything fun with small kids because they don't remember it?
I see your point if this would be the only great holiday they cold ever take, but I doubt that's the case.

I suspect the Penguin family will have lots of travel adventures together.
I used to think the same as picky - why take such little kids on a holiday like that - but they will learn and have fun (even if they don't consciously remember, they will see new things, new people, new animals etc).

My two were a dream last year going to Uganda - turns out they love travelling. Except for the 6am first leg where the air stewards took my carry on (so we had no food or amusement, plus VERY tired kids) it was a dream. I was terrified taking them both on my own, but they were better behaved than most of the adults.
