I'm planning a trip th Vancouver, including a cruise to Alaska, and possible stopovers in Korea and Hawaii. I will be leaving about two months from now, but for various reasons, won't have the cash for flights for another month. At this stage, my questions are, what visas do I need, and how soon do I need to apply for them?

Thanks, W3. I haven't been to any of these countries before. Was thinking of booking flights and stopovers through an agent where a friend works. Once I get there I will be staying with random figments and other online friends, or getting local advice locally.

If you have an Australian passport you don't need any visas, unless you are going to stay in the US for more than 90 days. If not, you simply have to apply for the ESTA on line, an electronic pre-approval thing which allows them to check first you are not a terrorist or an undesirable criminal. Costs about $14.

Thanks, Libby. For a while I was wondering what an ESTA was, when I looked at the website. I hate acronyms, especially when the assumption is that everyone uses the same ones. I finally found the explanation in the FAQs.
