Here’s a question for you – if you had 10-14 days to go away later in the year (Oct/Nov) and you’d had a stressful time lately, would you a) go back to a country you love, but visit a different area or b) go somewhere completely different on the other side of the world from a).
I was leaning towards a, but now b seems more appealing. It’ll all come down to flight prices in the end probably, but just curious what figjammmers would do.

I would go somewhere that I could de stress easily.. For me it would be where there is sun, salt water, snorkelling..and no language issues.

Mmm.... probably a, under those circumstances.

i'd probably go by flight prices and similar. or make some spontaneous decision. there are lots of places i'd like to go to again, but i always want to see new places, too - might not be always exactly relaxing, but the excitement of seeing something completely new makes me forget the stress ...

I always say that if I'd been through a shitty time and wanted to relax I would either go back to Naxos or to Lapad (Dubrovnik) and relax there for 2 weeks in a comfy appartment. Do some hiking, sightseeing, eating, sleeping. But I guess for Oct/Nov that's useless.
Close you eyes, deep breath... now tell me the first place that popped into your mind.

a) Take out travel time from a b choice with 10-14 days and you won't have too many days to unwind before it's time to head home again. b would be my choice if the timeframe was longer although these days I tend to do things differently now and spend 2 weeks in a new place to explore and detach myself from the work stress and start the unwinding process then go on to an a) type place and bomb out for the next 2 weeks. I also now go self catering so that if I want a lazy morning I don't feel obligated to get up so the cleaning staff get ansty.

I'd probably go for somewhere I know, but maybe change it up a bit- go for a bit more luxury. Or go somewhere close to home that I've always wanted to go where the travel is easy.

B) you are so busy discovering a new place you will forget about any stress.

I think there is some truth in that; while I like the idea of just relaxing, more than a few days and I start to get antsy and look for the nearest city! Choice a) would probably be somewhere in Brazil again - we found some really good deals where we could fly with a charter airline, have a base but travel from there to nearby cities if we wanted to. b) could be the Far East or Indonesia - would be 14 days then. Need to look into the weather at that time of year.

October November is good for Thailand and surrounding countries. The season is just starting on the west coast of the peninsular (Malaysia, Thailand, burma). Northern areas of Thailand and Cambodia and Laos are coming out of the wet season and it's also quite cool (for those areas). In other words, perfect!
Vietnam and the east coast of Thailand and Malaysia wouldn't be a good idea - we had a typhoon mid November in Vietnam and it's the rainy season in Thailand and Malaysia on the east coast.
Indonesia I have less experience - I've been to Lombok in November and it was ok weather wise. December is supposed to be the rainiest month in Bali, but I've been to Bali in December and the weather was ok too.

I think similar to HD, somewhere familiar but give my self a bit of luxury.

I'm constantly plagued by that question - go back to the places I love yet again or explore one of the countkess places that I still haven't gotten to yet. I don't really prioritize the one over the other in terms of destressing, because any travel planning, whether to a new place or a familiar one, will distract me from stress. You know, even if it's going to a known city or natural area yet again there's always something new to explore, new people to meet, or just the pleasure of becoming a little more familiar with a place that was once unknown.
That didn't really answer your question, did it.

One option that has come up is Kerala - anyone been? I know little about it except for the backwaters. Only spent one night in India (stopover in Mumbai) but loved Sri Lanka; the scenery looks a bit similar to there. Would be at the end of November.

I don't think I voted on this yet, because I'm not sure what I'd do - either could work to relax after such a stressful time. but seeing womba3's links makes me think that Kerala could just be the place to de-stress.... looks very nice!

I was in Kerala for a week during the monsoon about 10 years ago and it only rained once! (But boy did it rain.) I'd absolutely go back there.

It could be someplace new, but a beach is necessary. At my worst stressful times ever that's where I ended up.

The holiday I like best are ones with a 1-3 days of down time then activity.
So my choice would be which one gives me that - all things being equal I'd probably pick somewhere new.

kerala is great! i spent half a year there in 2010/11 - starting in september. that is usually the end of the rainy season we were told, though that year it carried on longer - but the amount of rain varied. some weeks it was a lot, but others was almost none. the backwaters and cochin are great, and i loved munnar and wayanad. for beaches, we went to varkala a couple of times, which i enjoyed despite being quite touristy (though the first time we went, in november, it was a lot emptier than the second time, in february), and periyar is also nice ... and more places ... so imho you should definitely consider going there ...

Periyar is fantastic! Make sure to wear leech socks, though.

Thanks for the info on Kerala, we booked the flights! So far planning to visit Cochin, the backwaters and the tiger reserve (although quite rare to see a tiger there apparently).

Ah, good that you've made a decision. I just love the first link of Wombat's. Makes me wish I was there.
