Has anyone eaten Alpaca?
I had the opportunity to buy some on Saturday so I'm cooking it tonight. First of all I brined it for 4 hours, then I'm slow cooking it for 4 hours with a chilli, onion and garlic paste.
Dr W3 is under instructions to put it in the oven at 3pm.
I have a back up dish for me if I suddenly decide I can't eat it (which is a distinct possibility - I'm funny like that).

The pub at Berry does alpaca burgers. They are very, very yummy - even if they are one of my favourite animals and I think they are just so cute and fluffy, it didn't stop my trying the burger!

They are cute and fluffy indeed.
I'm a bit funny with meat full stop. Although I will happily eat crispy bacon until the cows (pigs?) come home.

What is the cut? I had it as steaks but I didn't do the cooking myself. In Peru it was reasonably tender, in Bolivia however it was hard! They tend to eat very well done meat in south America, even if the cut is most tender.
The people and the alpacas made my trip special but I have no problem eating alpacas.
Just try it. Then yak next (tough and has a very strong smell!).

It was a leg, so long slow cooking was the recommended method. It's the only way I can eat meat, so that's why I got that cut.
I didn't end up eating any, but Dr W3 did. He said don't bother buying any again - it's just meat.

Wombatrois, I did.. But not the usual way.. The usual way is fried and whole.. I have see tourists turn green when presented with a whole guinea pig this way (head and all). I had it with meat only with a cherry sauce in a fancy restaurant in Arequipa..easier to enjoy, but really not a unique taste. Just one more protein source which tastes like chicken.

Google alpaca hum and various you tube links come up. Or fly back out to Oz, and I'll take you to some alpaca farms not too far from us and you can hear them.

Have you ever heard them when they're being shorn? OMG it sounds like a small child is having its throat cut - truly a horrible sound. And they have to tie them up (loosely) so they're strung out with there forelegs above their head.
Anyway, I'm wearing an alpaca jacket today because it's freezing and I'm a warm as, well, an alpaca I suppose.
