I have a wedding to go to in the summer in Linz, Austria. Well, the dilemma whether or not I should go is an OP in itself - but maybe combining it with some travel will make the wedding more appealing So, I would have about 1,5 week/10 days, which needs to include a weekend in Linz. Probably backpacking, using local public transport. What would be interesting places to see in that time? I'm thinking of the southeast of Germany, maybe Munich and Nurenberg where I've never been - of include the southern part of the Czech Republic. I don't want to visit only cities so am looking for some inspiration for a varied trip (would be great if there are some easily accessible hiking areas to get to - but that allow some hiking by myself as it looks I'm heading there solo).

I like Munich, it's a nice city and there's loads to do.
We spent our honeymoon in Munich and - mostly - Achenkirch in Austria. The Austrian countryside is so beautiful.

The New York Times has an article "36 Hours in Innsbruck" on the travel page right now which made me think of this thread - here it is, in case it helps you decide: nyti.ms/12ctzB8

still thinking about this trip - somehow I seem to be leaning towards spending some time in the Czech Republic. My trips exploring the central european countries have always been so good.
anyone have any input for that part of Europe? Not so much Prague, but the southern part of the country mostly. (I've pm'ed Rez) I may do an overnight in Munich on my way to Linz (planning on going there by train) as I realized I should have a friend there (who I haven't been in touch with for a while so I should check if she's still there)

Another vote for Austrlan countryside, it is beautiful! Lots of cute small villages and towns all over Austria. Maybe try to combine it with some time across the Czech border too or with Munich.

I'm sure the Austrian country side would be beautiful - but I have this idea in my head that Austria is expensive and that Czech Republic is (much) cheaper. is that true? or am I completely mistaken?
