off the tops of your enlightened heads, can this be done quickly/cheaply?
there is a chance i may visit family this june, and last heard they were a shortdistance from brisbane. it looks like i can get decent flights to melbourne, but i don't want to tour the whole country. we're planning several trips this year so this one will be a budget family zoom.
aside from flights, any other cheap/quick methods? my guess is that bus/train will be very very long. do good fares come up often? i'd be travelling with carry-on only. ('cause, like, i'm a REAL traveller.)

Fly. Train would be madness - there is no direct train, so you'd have to go overnight (or day) from Melb to Sydney, then change in Sydney for the train to Brisbane. And I'm not even sure if the train still goes to all the way to Brisbane or becomes a bus somewhere along the way.
There would be long distance buses, but you are looking at similar length of journey as a flight to Europe from here, and it is just hell (I've done the Sydney to Brisbane and Sydney to Melb overland at different times, and would never, ever want to combine the two)
Fares, keep a look for jetstar, virgin or qantas sales. They do come up fairly frequently.

Agree with Hal, don't even think of anything other than flying.
If you know your dates now, start keeping an eye out for sales. And you will likely pay less if you fly with carry-on only for the budget airlines (i.e. not Qantas).

thanks for that. if i do this, i'll stay in the brisbane area. i have friends in bundaberg i wouldn't mind seeing, but it's a lot of travel for a coffee.
i'll update here in case anyone should be around for tea and sunscreen. (yeah, i know it'll be winter for you, but not my sort of winter)

The night train from Sydney still goes all the way to Brisbane (via Casino and Kyogle). However, there are several flights from Melbourne to Brisbane every day. Without luggage, Jetstar offers a pretty good deal. (Also Melbourne to Gold Coast, if your family are south of Brisbane). Depending on when I get my second knee replacement, I might be up for a weekend in Brisbane and a Figment piss-up. (I will not be able to drive for 6 weeks after surgery). If I am abe to drive and you have time, I offer good tours of Byron Bay.

sign up to Jetstar's newsletter, they often have sale prices.
I normally can get Melb/Avalon to Brisbane for around $89. Though you won't want Melb/Avalon you want Melb/Tullamarine. Tulla flights are a bit dearer than Avalon but you have more flights to chose from.
