I'll be there for four days next week. What are the must sees, in your experience? Anything surprising or quirky that guidebooks might not pick up? Inexpensive but good places to eat?
We'll be based right next to the Basilica.
Thanks!

The baths the baths, whether you go for the full on Gellert experience or what.
I think there are some on an island in the Danube which are supposed to be amazing in the snow.

XPosted from the Stew, but I loved the New York cafe - beautiful place. budapest.boscolohotels.com/restaurant-and-bar/new-york-cafe/We went to the Szechenyi baths, which are IMMENSE! Take flip flops / slippers for walking around outside, you can rent a large towel and although you can rent a changing room for personal use, you don't need to and they have lockers and hairdryers in the basement area where the non-tourists get changed. I have to say - I felt so wonderfully rested the next day after being there! My back had been agony for days before this and I think the heat (and the cold one we jumped in!) and weight-bearing water made all the difference. It was fabulous, definitely going back. www.szechenyibath.com/services.phpThere are lots of bus tour operators, I'm not sure any one is much better than another, but they are well worth looking at.

The New York Café is lovely and had good cakes, at least when I was there.
And the baths for sure!
When I was there my friend and I hung out at the baths and swimming pools all day and went to concerts (classical, folk music, ballet etc) in the evenings...

It was great. We went to Gellert baths. But I wish we'd gone to Szechenyi too. There was a naturally fed pond/lake in the park nearby. The air temperature was freezing, but steam was coming off the pond...where the luckiest ducks in the world were swimming. And we went to the Book Cafe which was magnificent. I couldspend whole days going from one coffee house to another.
