Anyone tried sous vide cooking? Son was telling me about it today, and having steak done that way for his Christmas dinner. Sounds interesting, though doubt I could be bothered.

Eaten it at restaurants. Wouldn't bother at home.

I talked to this one person who had a sous vide system, and he said it did amazing things. So, I'd say that if your hobby is about perfecting your cooking to the absolutely highest standard (like I think his probably is), then maybe you'd want to do that.
I personally would never bother with it; I don't buy unitasker machines and I don't cook complicated, perfect things.

I had to google it... Sounds too involved for my likes. I have an unrefined palate and make do with basic cooking where the most complicated element is making sure different parts of the meal are ready at the same time.

We have a sous vide system here. Worth the effort :-)

Ha, perfecting my cooking to the highest standard is so far from reality - my motto is 'just get it done'. So obviously sous vide is not for me. Will wait till I visit my son and hope he'll want to show off for me.

Also had to google. As someone who would frequently eat cereal instead of making an evening meal, I would say no, it wouldn't be my thing. This explains why my husband does most of the cooking in our house!

.... make do with basic cooking where the most complicated element is making sure different parts of the meal are ready at the same time. That's me too! Sous vide is fine to me in theory (or at a restaurant), but if you're doing meat that way you generally need to then pan fry it for a minute to get any kind of sear/crust on it. I'm also with Liiiisa on the 'no single function machines' rule.

I can't imagine a steak, which should already be tender, really getting nice and brown in a sous vide.
Isn't the whole point of a steak that it should be browned and rare.

i plan to get a slow cooker this year, and have a rice cooker already. that's about as complicated as i'll go. a friend just got a thermomixer and swears by it, but any cooking thing that offers financing is out of my budget.
i'd happily eat someone else's sous vide, but yeah, don't have the palate for the effort/expense to be worth it.
