I just bought a slow cooker, just to make this recipe: www.carlsbadcravings.com/asian-sweet-chili-sesame-chicken/Actually the whole webpage made me want to cook more. The pictures made me drool, and I love the kind of fall apart texture of meat, so thought I could use it for similar stuff. And it was a cheap one, which is how I justify m,y purchase. So - do you have one? What's your favourite recipe?

Does a slow cooker do anything that a casserole in a low oven can't? (If you already have those things, is there any advantage in a slow cooker?)

The advantage is you can put it on before you leave for work and come home to an amazing meal. I'd be reluctant to do that with an oven.
I do a great roast beef recipe
Rolled beef 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce 1/2 Cup of Worcester sauce Garlic pepper
put the beef in the slow cooker mix the other ingredients and pour over the top. cook on the low setting.
Also lamb shanks are the best done in a slow cooker mix a tin of tomatoes, red wine, garlic and pepper pour over the lamb shanks cook on low

The advantage is you can put it on before you leave for work and come home to an amazing meal. I'd be reluctant to do that with an oven. That seems to be the only advantage I can find people mentioning as well. I don't really have the bench space for extra stuff so stick with doing stove top casseroles. Oh, one other advantage could be that I don't use the low oven or stove top for casseroles until it is really cold here, as our kitchen is tiny and gets incredibly hot. It is lovely in winter when it warms the rest of the house having the oven on for hours, but other times of the year it is just unpleasant. Maybe if I had a slow cooker it wouldn't heat up the rest of the flat as much. But like I said, tiny kitchen and not enough room.

The not heating the house during summer is another advantage

low temp on the oven. Probably mean slow oven, so the temp is around 160C. But even that heats up my house too much if the day has been warm. Had something on at that temp last night and it ended up unpleasant,

Ahh thanks. I have a kitchen designed from the arse end of the 50s with appliances from a landlord who previously had tenants from hell (so no real expense spent). I thought this may be a new type of oven.
Fwiw i think the slow cooker is worth the space if you like the result (I do). I keep mine in a cupboard and fill it with other stuff. I also use my oven for storage.

And the slow cooker uses much less power than an oven.. I used to use mine a lot when I worked, but these days I seldom use it.

I put the slow cooker on when I go to bed, then take the results for dinner at work.

I have to say I loved the result after using it the first time today! I have the shelf space and its nice to just leave it running which I don't tend to do with my oven when I go out. Also yes, less electricity, and no heat escapes.
That pulled chili chicken was sooo nice (I added more chili), and would be great for lunch as well!
Thanks for the recipe ideas!
