If you were pondering said, would you start from: 1) Gingerbread, with added orange zest and orange icing (which is the first recipe I came across) 2) Orange-flavoured sponge with added ginger flavour (ground, plus chopped stem ginger on top or similar) 3) One of those cakes made with boiled oranges, and ground almonds, often flourless with some added ginger 4) Other (please explain)?

2) because I think added ginger would work better than added orange.

Sort of 2, but I'd use a buttercake rather than a sponge. I think gingerbread would be too heavy.

I don't think the flavours go together at all.

love ginger and orange. i'd go for some version of 2. partly because it sounds like a better taste than gingerbread with orange--the gingerbread is quite strong, can the orange get through? and also because it seems quite straightforward.
