So my travel plans changed from my original thoughts in a different thread. I don't usually travel in the summer months and whew, airfares are a bitch lol.
I plan to be in Berlin for a few days and then on to some place in Poland.
Do you have any favorite places to stay in Berlin? Not too crazy touristy.
And any places in Poland that you would say--you have to go? Krakow? Worth the hype?
I am a low key traveler. Sure I like to see the big things, eg. what's left of the Berlin Wall, but am pretty much satisfied sitting in outdoor cafes and meandering around interesting neighborhoods.

Following this as prep for my own Berlin trip. About Poland, I've only been to Krakow but really enjoyed it. Beautiful town. Auschwitz is a must visit if you go to Krakow. The southern mountains in Poland are beautiful, apparently, if you enjoy hiking and such.

I am hoping to catch a couple of musicians while in Berlin. One is my friend's brother. That could help me decide where to stay for convenience sake.

We stayed in Prenzlauer Berg area in Berlin - worked well for us. Some good parks for LC, walking distance to Mauer Park and the Sunday markets, loads of great cafes and lots of places to eat out at night. But the street we stayed on was nice and quiet and so we were never disturbed at nice.

If you go to Kraków, go to the salt mines. Fascinating place.

Krakow is lovely. And a good place to just hang out. My inlaw family live in the Beskid mountains to the south. It's a lovely part of the world.

Krakow is nice but I didn't do much of the touristy stuff there since I had the mini penguins with me...

Trip report just so we can save it for future reference. Warsaw, seemed just a large city with a smallish old town. There are lots of museums though and official buildings. I didn't pick a very good place to stay as it was out pretty far on the bus line and you couldn't walk anywhere (or there was no place to go to eat other than the b&b). Krakow, much better. I stayed in a really economical private hostel room near the train station. Old town was really close. I didn't get to the Schindler factory. Started out on foot but got off track somewhere along the way and had to bus it back. Should have just taken a taxi. Went to Auschwitz. I think all should have that experience if you can handle it. Honestly it was not as emotion provoking as the camp I visited outside of Prague. The one outside of Prague seemed to be more intact as not as sanitized, which was emotionally disturbing, and it was the first one I saw. Though it was not an extermination camp. Most of the elements were there.
Wroclaw was the best. It is a University town, so it seems very lively. The exchange rate was crazy good. I had trouble spending all my PL dollars. Back via Amsterdam. I could have stayed a week there.

No I didn't make Berlin this time. Turns out I could get cheap airfares from Amsterdam to Warsaw and then from Wroclaw to Amsterdam. I never have enough time.

okay, coming back to this thread as it's time to get my own Berlin trip sorted out.
mostly: any suggestions for a good, kind of different, or maybe typically Berlin restaurant for a good evening out? or maybe a cocktail bar at a unique location? or well, something a little bit unique to take my boyfriend to :-)
of course, other suggestions of how to fill our time there are very welcome! we'll have two full days, and two half days. the city is new for me, so am up for anything interesting (history, culture, food). we're thinking of maybe renting bicycles for a day or so, is that a good idea?

Did Cookie/Cooksterella (what was her handle again?) go to Berlin recently - you could ask her on FB for food tips.

I went to Poland for three weeks in July. I loved it.
Warsaw was fantastic, it was so lively, if anyone is going, I recommend Warsaw Uprising Museum. Krakow is great as well, I just love the old town. Wieliczka Salt Mines are otherworldly. If you go to Krakow, stay in one of the old town apartments- cheap and beautiful. No need to stay in hostels to save money. Hotels are expensive.
