I have a possible opportunity to be in London when my niece's high school band marches in a New Year's day parade or something like that. Anyway, if I was staying in a hotel on the 24th-26th, what should I expect? It seems like the UK pretty much shuts down on the 24-26th. What is there to do?

Shopping on the 26th... on Christmas Day the big thing would be Christmas dinner, probably at the hotel, 24th things are open, except it's Sunday this year. Church services too, if you'd like that.

25th is pretty much a total shut down. Public transport will not run so if you make any plans keep it local to the hotel or expect to pay for cabs.
24th and 26th will be fine. Although the 26th is a holiday here so some things will be closed.

To add to the above, taxis charge extra rates on Christmas Day and Boxing Day (the 26th) and possibly Christmas Eve which is worth considering in planning activities.
We tend to spend time at home or go for a quiet walk in the sticks and enjoy the peace and quiet so can't really help with any activities.

if the weather is good, it could be a great chance to walk/cycle London without all the hordes. you see a lot more that way. and there are some lovely little parks, like the one behind St Pancras that highlights canal wildlife.
